Cultural Context and Interaction in Teaching Turkish: Task-Based Culinary Practices and Student Experiences

Abstract

This study aims to examine the experiences of international students learning Turkish through culinary-based activities designed within the framework of task-based language teaching and to explore how these experiences are reflected in their language learning processes. The study was conducted using a qualitative research approach and a case study design. The participants consisted of 20 international students from different cultural backgrounds studying at the B1 level at Anadolu University, Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Center who voluntarily participated in the culinary activities. Data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews and analyzed using content analysis with the MAXQDA program. During the analysis process, codes, categories, and themes were generated to describe the students’ experiences. The findings indicate that culinary-based tasks supported the development of speaking and listening skills in particular, enriched vocabulary, and enabled students to use the language more frequently in real-life contexts. In addition, while the activities initially caused negative emotions such as anxiety and shyness, these feelings were gradually replaced by relaxation, confidence, and a sense of belonging in later practices. International students also reported that the interaction they established with Turkish students and teaching staff during the culinary activities improved their social skills and increased their awareness of Turkish culture. In conclusion, culinary-based activities designed within the framework of task-based language teaching appear to provide an effective learning environment that holistically supports the teaching of Turkish as a foreign language from both linguistic and cultural perspectives.

Türkçe Öğretiminde Kültürel Bağlam ve Etkileşim: Görev Temelli Mutfak Uygulamaları ve Öğrenci Deneyimleri

Abstract

Öz Bu çalışmanın amacı, görev temelli dil öğretimi yaklaşımı kapsamında tasarlanan mutfak uygulamalarına katılan uluslararası öğrencilerin Türkçe öğrenme süreçlerine ilişkin deneyimlerini incelemektir. Nitel araştırma yaklaşımı çerçevesinde yürütülen araştırmada durum çalışması deseni kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın katılımcılarını Anadolu Üniversitesi, Türkçe Öğretimi Uygulama ve Araştırma Merkezinde B1 düzeyinde öğrenim gören ve mutfak uygulamalarına gönüllü olarak katılan farklı kültürel arka planlara sahip 20 uluslararası öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Veriler, yarı yapılandırılmış bireysel görüşmeler yoluyla toplanmış ve MAXQDA programı kullanılarak içerik analizine tabi tutulmuştur. Analiz sürecinde kodlar, kategoriler ve temalar oluşturularak öğrencilerin deneyimleri betimlenmiştir. Bulgular, mutfak temelli görevlerin özellikle konuşma ve dinleme becerilerinin gelişimini desteklediğini, kelime dağarcığını zenginleştirdiğini ve öğrencilerin dili gerçek yaşam bağlamlarında daha fazla kullanmalarına olanak tanıdığını göstermektedir. Ayrıca uygulamaların başlangıçta kaygı ve çekingenlik gibi olumsuz duygulara neden olduğu; ancak süreç ilerledikçe bu duyguların yerini rahatlama, güven ve aidiyet hissine bıraktığı belirlenmiştir. Uluslararası öğrenciler, mutfak uygulamaları sırasında Türk öğrenciler ve öğretim elemanlarıyla kurdukları etkileşimin sosyal becerilerini geliştirdiğini ve Türk kültürüne yönelik farkındalıklarını artırdığını ifade etmişlerdir. Sonuç olarak görev temelli dil öğretimi yaklaşımı temel alınarak tasarlanan mutfak uygulamalarının yabancı dil olarak Türkçe öğretiminde dilsel ve kültürel boyutları bütüncül biçimde destekleyen etkili bir öğrenme ortamı sunduğu görülmektedir.
