In this paper, 18 polysemous lexemes were selected from the Turkish Dictionaries and it was proven with survey research and analysis of contents that these had transitioned pragmatically from their connotative meanings to basic meanings.
A questionnaire was prepared to determine the first meaning that comes to mind for the words selected with a survey research. The survey was administered to 100 participants, 63 females and 37 males, with an average age of 33, from different educational levels; They were asked to determine the first meaning that came to their minds for the words on the survey and use the words in a sentence. The Turkish National Corpus prepared by the English Linguistics Program of the Mersin University was utilized for the content analysis. The concepts and frequencies shown within the context of the target lexical units were evaluated. In light of the data obtained from both methods, it was determined that the basic meanings of these lexical units had been forgotten or lost, whereas, the meanings stated to be secondary had transitioned to the basic meaning in the present-day use of Turkish.
