AUTHOR GUIDELINES
Preparation of the Article and Writing Guidelines
Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals (December 2021) prepared by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) (www.icmje.org) has been adopted in the preparation of the Akdeniz Medical Journal (AMJ; Akd Tıp D / Akd Med J) article writing rules.
General Principles
1.The articles submitted for publication in the journal should be written double-spaced with a 12-point Times New Roman font, leaving a 3-cm margin at sides.
2. Abbreviations should be written in full at their first occurrence in the text, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Unconventional abbreviations should not be used.
3. Numbers between one and ten in the text should be written in words (e.g., in both treatment groups, on the second day), whereas numbers 10 and above should be expressed in numerals. However, numbers between 1 and 10 that are used with a descriptive suffix should be written in numerals (e.g., 1 year), whereas numbers at the beginning of a sentence (e.g., Fifteen-year-old female patient) should be written in words.
4. The main and subheadings in the text should be written without numbering.
5. All pages should be numbered sequentially.
There is no specific word limit for original research and review articles; the appropriateness of the length will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis for each manuscript.
Case reports should be limited to 1,500 words, excluding the Abstract. Letters to the Editor may be submitted on various topics or regarding articles published in the journal, and responses from the authors may be requested. Letters to the Editor should not exceed 1,000 words, must not include tables or figures, and must be signed by all authors. The decision to publish such letters rests with the editor. Date, topic, and speaker announcements related to scientific meetings in the field of medicine may also be published. Manuscripts should be organized in the order specified below.
Title Page:
The Turkish and English titles of the manuscript, the names of the authors, their affiliations (institutions), academic titles, and contact information (e-mails and phone numbers), as well as the institution supporting the study, if applicable, should be provided. The internationally valid ORCID identifiers of all authors must be provided. If the manuscript has been previously presented at a scientific meeting, the name, place, and date of the meeting should be indicated. In addition, the name, surname, full address, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail address of the corresponding author must be clearly stated on this page.
Abstract:
The abstract should be prepared on a separate page in both Turkish (max. 250 words) and English (max. 300 words), including the headings. The abstract should accurately reflect the content of the manuscript, present the main findings, and include a brief interpretation of the results. Abbreviations that are not defined within the abstract should not be used, and references should not be cited in this section. Turkish and English abstracts should be structured as follows: Objective/Amaç; Method(s)/Yöntemler; Results/Bulgular; Conclusion(s)/Sonuç(lar)
Keywords:
Keywords in both Turkish and English should be provided in accordance with the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) standards. A minimum of 3 and a maximum of 10 keywords should be listed below the Turkish and English abstracts of all manuscripts. It should be noted that keywords are among the most important elements for access to publications.
Sections:
Original research articles should include the following sections: Introduction; Materials and Methods (study design, case selection and description, technical information, statistical analysis, etc.); Results; Discussion; and Conclusion. Case reports should include Introduction, Case Presentation(s), Discussion, and Conclusion.
Following these sections, an Acknowledgments section may be included, if applicable, to recognize individuals who contributed to the research or the preparation of the manuscript. Acknowledgments should be placed at the end of the manuscript, before the References section. This section may include expressions of thanks for personal, technical, or material support.
References:
References should be listed at the end of the manuscript in the order in which they appear in the text and numbered accordingly. In-text citations should be indicated in parentheses. There should be no discrepancy between the order of references in the list and their order of citation in the text. Sources that have not been consulted in their original form but are cited through another source should not be numbered; in unavoidable cases, they may be indicated in parentheses. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of the references. All references must be cited in the text.
References should be formatted as shown in the examples below. All authors must be listed, without the use of “et al.”. Journal names should be abbreviated according to Index Medicus. Journal names not indexed in Index Medicus should not be abbreviated.
Examples for the Formatting of References:
For journals:
Muzaale AD, Massie AB, Wang MC, Montgomery RA , McBride MA , Wainright JL, Segev DL. Risk of end-stage renal disease following live kidney donation. JAMA 2014; 311:579-86.
For books:
Chabner ba, Longo DL: Cancer Chemotherapy and Biotherapy: Principles and Practice, 5th ed. Philadelphia, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2011.
For chapters in books:
Goadsby PJ. Pathophysiology of headache. In: Silberstein SD, Lipton RB, Dalessio DJ, eds. Wolff ’s headache and other head pain. 7th ed. Oxford, England: Oxford University Press, 2001:57-72.
For conference papers:

EuroGP 2002: Proceedings of the 5th European Conference on Genetic Programming; 2002 Apr 3-5; Kinsdale, Ireland. Berlin: Springer; 2002. p. 182-91.
For online articles:
U.S. Renal Data System. USRDS 2007 annual data report. Bethesda, MD: National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institutes of Health, 2007 (http://www.usrds.org/atlas07.aspx).
For journal supplements:
Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) Acute Kidney Injury Work Group. KDIGO clinical practice guideline for acute kidney injury. Kidney Int Suppl 2012;2:1-138.
For Turkish references not indexed in Index Medicus, the above examples should be followed, with journal names written in full without abbreviation.
Tables
1.Tables should come after the References section, and each table should be presented on a separate page.
2. Tables should be numbered with Roman numerals in the order in which they appear in the text.
3. Table titles should be concise and placed above the table.
4. Table explanations and abbreviations should be placed below the table.
5.Each table must be referred to in the text.
6. The data presented in the tables should support the main text data and should not be a repetition of the data in the main text.
7. When using previously published tables, copyright permission should be obtained and should be stated in the table description. Writers have full legal, financial and penal responsibilities on these issues.
Figures, Images and Graphics
Figures should be placed on a page separate from the text. The figures should either be drawn or photographed professionally or sent digitally in photo quality. The electronic files should be sent as high-resolution (pixel size 500x400 and 300 dpi resolution) electronic images, such as JPEG or GIF, and the authors should check the image quality of these files on the computer screen before sending. Symbols, arrows, and letters should contrast with the background. The staining techniques used in microscopy images and magnification must be specified. If a human image is used, either the person should not be recognized in the picture or written permission should be obtained (see ethics section). The figure and image legends should be placed at the bottom with Arabic numerals (1,2,3,....). The figures should be numbered according to their order in the text. Each figure should be referred to in the text.
Submission of Manuscripts to the Journal: Manuscripts should be submitted as electronic files written using Microsoft Word 2003 or later versions. A cover letter addressed to the editor should also be included, stating the type of the manuscript (original research, case report, review, etc.), the topic of the study, the contributions it will make to the literature, and how it fits within the scope of the journal. The signed “Copyright Transfer Form” from all authors is also among the required documents. Upon receipt of the manuscript, an article number will be assigned and communicated to the authors, and this number must be used in all correspondence. Manuscripts should follow the order below, and each section should begin on a new page:
1 Title page
2 Abstract
3 Text
4 Acknowledgements

All pages should be numbered consecutively. Below is a checklist provided to ensure that authors verify there are no missing items before submission.
