Author Guidelines

Manuscripts can be prepared as free format at the first submission (please provide your file as Microsoft Word). However, the articles accepted for publication must be prepared in accordance with the journal template. After the peer-reviews, the articles accepted for publication should be prepared by the authors in accordance with the BAROFD Journal printing format. Please, click the link to download the template.

The aim of Bartin Orman Fakultesi Dergisi (BAROFD) is to provide a balance between forestry, and forest biomaterial science aspects, basic and applied research, and development. The Journal also aims to provide a forum for the prompt publication of original research on all areas of Forestry, and forest biomaterials, with emphasis being placed on evaluation and modelling of engineering details and concepts. Basic research papers are welcomed as well as proposals for review articles.

 Article structure
Manuscripts should be written clearly and concisely. Authors should be able to present their material within a single, well-structured concise manuscript. Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Author Contributions, Conflict of Interest, Appendix, References.

• Research papers should be no more than 18 manuscript pages, with 1.15 line spacing, including references, figures, and tables.
• Brief research papers should be no more than 5 manuscript pages, with 1.15 line spacing, including references, figures, and tables.
• Invited review should be no more than 25 manuscript pages, with 1.15 line spacing, including references, figures, and tables.

Submission checklist

You can use this list to carry out a final check of your submission before you send it to the journal for review. Please check the relevant section in this Guide for Authors for more details. Ensure that the following items are present:

One author has been designated as the corresponding author with contact details:

• E-mail address

• Full postal address

All necessary files have been uploaded:

Manuscript:

• Include keywords

• All figures (include relevant captions)

• All tables (including titles, description, footnotes)

• Ensure all figure and table citations in the text match the files provided

Further considerations

• Manuscript has been 'spell checked' and 'grammar checked'

• All references mentioned in the Reference List are cited in the text, and vice versa

• Permission has been obtained for use of copyrighted material from other sources (including the Internet)

•For studies requiring ethics committee approval, information regarding the approval (name of the committee, date, and approval number) has been included in the methods section and on the first/last page of the manuscript.

• A competing interests statement is provided, even if the authors have no competing interests to declare

Text layout

Use double spacing and wide (2.5 cm) margins. (Avoid full justification, i.e., do not use a constant right-hand margin.) Ensure that each new paragraph is clearly indicated. Present tables and figure legends in main text. If possible, consult a recent issue of the journal to become familiar with layout and conventions. Number all pages consecutively, use 10 pt font size, single line space and standard fonts.

Subdivision - numbered sections

Divide your article into clearly defined and numbered sections. Subsections should not be numbered. Each heading should appear on its own separate line.

Introduction

State the objectives of the work and provide an adequate background, avoiding a detailed literature survey or a summary of the results.

Material and methods

Provide sufficient details to allow the work to be reproduced by an independent researcher. Methods that are already published should be summarized, and indicated by a reference. If quoting directly from a previously published method, use quotation marks and also cite the source. Any modifications to existing methods should also be described.

Results

Results should be clear and concise.

Discussion

This should explore the significance of the results of the work, not repeat them. A combined Results and Discussion section is often appropriate. Avoid extensive citations and discussion of published literature.

Conclusions

The main conclusions of the study may be presented in a short Conclusions section, which may stand alone or form a subsection of a Discussion or Results and Discussion section.

Appendices

If there is more than one appendix, they should be identified as A, B, etc.

Title, Abstract and Author information

• Title: Concise and informative. Titles are often used in information-retrieval systems. Avoid abbreviations and formulae where possible.

• Abstract: A concise and factual abstract is required. The abstract should state briefly the purpose of the research, the principal results and major conclusions. An abstract is often presented separately from the article, so it must be able to stand alone. For this reason, References should be avoided, but if essential, then cite the author(s) and year(s). Also, non-standard or uncommon abbreviations should be avoided, but if essential they must be defined at their first mention in the abstract itself. The abstract should be between 200 (minimum) and 250 words (it can be extended as long as the total summary/abstract does not exceed the first page). Authors should add a maximum of five keywords in the manuscript.

• Author names and affiliations. Please clearly indicate the given name(s) and family name(s) of each author and check that all names are accurately spelled. You can add your name between parentheses in your own script behind the English transliteration. Present the authors' affiliation addresses (where the actual work was done) below the names. Indicate all affiliations with a lower-case superscript letter immediately after the author's name and in front of the appropriate address. Provide the full postal address of each affiliation, including the country name and, if available, the e-mail address of each author.

• Corresponding author: Clearly indicate who will handle correspondence at all stages of refereeing and publication, also post-publication. Ensure that the e-mail address is given and that contact details are kept up to date by the corresponding author. The address at which the author actually did the work must be retained as the main, affiliation address.

Abbreviations

Define abbreviations that are not standard in this field in a footnote to be placed on the first page of the article. Such abbreviations that are unavoidable in the abstract must be defined at their first mention there, as well as in the footnote. Ensure consistency of abbreviations throughout the article.

Acknowledgements

Collate acknowledgements in a separate section at the end of the article before the references. List here those individuals who provided help during the research (e.g., providing language help, writing assistance or proof reading the article, etc.). Funding sources in this standard way to facilitate compliance to funder's requirements should be written below:

This work was supported by the TUBITAK [grant numbers xxxx, yyyy] and Bartin University BAP [grant number zzzz].

It is not necessary to include detailed descriptions on the program or type of grants and awards. When funding is from a block grant or other resources available to a university, college, or other research institution, submit the name of the institute or organization that provided the funding.

If no funding has been provided for the research, please include the following sentence:

This research did not receive any specific grant from funding agencies in the public, commercial, or not-for-profit sectors.

Units

All measurements and data should be given in SI units, or if SI units do not exist, in an internationally accepted unit. If you use any symbol or unit that may not be generally recognized, please include an explanatory footnote the first time it is used, to help the referees, editors and readers.

Math formulae

Detailed mathematical discussion should be placed in an appendix. Equations and formulae should be typewritten wherever possible. Equations should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in parentheses on the right hand side of the page. Type or mark mathematical equations exactly as they should appear in print.

Figure and Table captions

Ensure that each Figure and Table have a caption. A caption should comprise a brief title for both figures and tables and a description of the illustration. Provide english/turkish title for each figure and table in the text.

Peer review
The Manuscripts submitted to the BAROFD are reviewed by the reviewers. According to the reviewers’ comments, the submitted manuscripts are accepted or declined. BAROFD is open access and the BAROFD provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. This journal operates a double-blind review process. Papers deemed suitable are then typically sent to a minimum of two independent expert reviewers to assess the scientific quality of the paper. If at least one of the reviewers considers that the manuscript has 'no scientific contrubition' or that is 'inferior to average', the manuscript publication will be declined. The Editor is responsible for the final decision regarding acceptance or rejection of articles. The Editor's decision is final.

Online proof correction

It is important to ensure that all corrections are sent back to us in one communication. Please check carefully before replying, as inclusion of any subsequent corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofreading is solely your responsibility, and it is not possible to corrections again your papers after publication. Our journal only offers online publication; we don’t offer any hardcopy for your papers.

Ethics in publishing
Bartın Journal of Faculty of Forestry accepts the standards announced by the Council of Higher Education as the basic conditions for research and publication ethics ( https://www.yok.gov.tr/Sayfalar/Kurumsal/mevzuat/bilimsel-arastirma-ve-etik-yonetmeligi.aspx).

Before submitting an article to the journal, authors should consider the standards announced by the Council of Higher Education, the recommendations of ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors) and the “International Standards for Editors and Authors” set by COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics).

Authors must ensure that the manuscript has not been issued elsewhere. Any work or words of other authors, contributors, or sources should be appropriately credited and referenced. Authors are also responsible for language editing before submitting the article. Authors submitting their works to the journal for publication as original articles confirm that the submitted works represent their authors’ contributions and have not been copied or plagiarized in whole or in part from other works without clearly citing. All authors should disclose financial or other conflict of interest that might influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own published work, it is the author’s obligation to promptly notify the journal editor and cooperate with the editor to retract or correct the paper. An author agrees to the license agreement before submitting the article. All articles must be submitted using online submission procedure. Submitting a paper simultaneously to more than one publication at a time is a breach of publications ethics. In studies requiring ethics committee approval, information regarding the approval (committee name, date and issue number) should be included in the method section and first/last page of the article.

Editors must ensure a good blind peer-review of the submitted manuscripts for publication. They will strive to prevent any potential conflict of interests between the author and editorial and review personnel. Editors will also ensure that all the information related to submitted manuscripts is kept as confidential before publishing. Editor-in-Chief will coordinate the work of the editors.

Reviewers evaluate manuscripts based on content without regard to ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, citizenship, religious belief or political philosophy of the authors. They must ensure that all the information related to submitted manuscripts is kept as confidential and must report to the Editor-in-Chief if they are aware of copyright infringement and plagiarism on the author’s side. They must evaluate the submitted works objectively as well as present clearly their opinions on the works in a clear way in the review form. A reviewer who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that its prompt review will be impossible should notify the Editor-in-Chief and excuse himself from the review process. Use of AI-Assisted Tools

Authors must clearly disclose any use of artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted tools (such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, DeepL, Copilot, etc.) in the preparation of their manuscript. AI tools should only be used for technical assistance (e.g., language editing, translation, code suggestions) and must not replace the author’s own scientific contributions, such as interpretation, analysis, or intellectual judgment.

AI tools cannot be listed as authors, and the human authors bear full responsibility for the content. The use of AI must be explicitly acknowledged in a separate section at the end of the article under the heading “AI Contribution” (e.g., “ChatGPT was used solely for English language editing in this study.”).
