Today, family businesses constitute a significant part of enterprises
in the world and in Turkey. In these businesses, nepotism have been seen especially at
the appointments to the top management positions. This issue brings with it significant
problems, especially if the assigned family members and relatives can not have the
required qualifications. One way to overcome this issue is by separating management from
ownership. Institutionalization is seen as a way of achieving this. The aim of this study is to
determine the relationship between the level of institutionalization and nepotism in family
businesses. Within this scope, a questionnaire composing scales of institutionalization and
nepotism has been formed. The questionnaires have been applied to seven medium and
large scale family businesses in Balıkesir Organised Industrial Zone through convenience
sampling technique, between 19-30 September 2016. 232 employees have been participated
to the study. The results of the study showed that there was a significant and negatively
relationship between institutionalism and nepotism. The most important limitation of the
study that the results of the study cannot be generalized, as the survey was administered in
only seven family businesses in Balıkesir Organised Industrial Zone.
