The Transfer of Mind Style into the Turkish Translation of William Faulkner’s The Sound and The Fury

Öz








This study seeks to analyse how Benjamin’s mind style was transferred into the Turkish translation
of
The Sound and The Fury, considering the fact that the translation came out in 1965, when the
stylistic features of the Western modernist novel were yet to be imported to the Turkish novel. The 
study focuses on Geoffrey Leech and Mick Short’s (1981) stylistic checklist in order to carry out the
analysis. The study also sheds light on the paratextual information on the Turkish translation, since it
provides insight into whether the translator’s stylistic choices were influenced by the context of the
Turkish literary field. Ultimately, the study shows that the source-text stylistic features (e.g. those
stemming from Benjamin’s synaesthesia) which deviate from the grammatical structure and punctuation rules of Turkish were ironed out in the translation, whereas the other stylistic features that do
not distort the readability of the translation were reproduced by the translator.

William Faulkner’ın The Sound and The Fury Eserinde Düşünce Biçeminin Türkçeye Aktarılması

Bu çalışmada, modernist romanın biçemsel özelliklerinin Batı tarzı modernist romanlarda görüldüğü
şekliyle Türkiye’de henüz ön plana çıkmamış olduğu 1965 yılında Türkçeye kazandırılan
The
Sound and The Fury
eserindeki Benjamin karakterinin anlatısında geçen ve karakterin bilişsel düzeyini
yansıtan düşünce biçeminin Türkçeye nasıl aktarıldığı incelenmektedir. İnceleme için Geoffrey Leech
ve Mick Short (1981) tarafından biçemsel özellikler için oluşturulan kontrol listesi kullanılmaktadır.
Çevirmenin biçemsel tercihlerine ışık tutması bakımından, çeviriye yanmetin ögeleri olarak eklenen
ön söz ve çevirmen notu da incelenerek, çevirinin yapıldığı dönemde çeviriye ve çevirmene ilişkin
toplumsal beklentilerin Benjamin’in düşünce biçeminin Türkçeye aktarılmasında bir etkisinin olup
olmadığına bakılmaktadır. Sonuç olarak, ölçünlü Türkçenin yapısına, noktalama işaretlerine uymayan
ve anlatım bozukluğuna yol açan dil kullanımlarının ve Benjamin’in sinestezik algı şeklinin düşünce
biçemine yansıması nedeniyle kaynak metinde anlam bütünlüğünü bozan ifadelerin çeviride Türkçe
anlatım kurallarına uygun olarak düzeltildiği durumların dışında, biçemsel özelliklerin çeviriye
aktarıldığı tespit edilmiştir.
