The Social and Economic Status of NIŠ Iin 1498

Abstract

Niš is an important city of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans. Niš is generally believed to have come under Turkish rule in 1386. Due to the region's important military, agricultural, and geographical position, Niš has often been the scene of wars. The main source of this research, the Mufassal Tapu Tahrir Defteri (Detailed Land Registry Ledger) dated 1498 and numbered 27, belongs to the oldest and first known tahrir (land registry) of Niš. The book contains records of real estate, population, waqf (religious endowments), and timar (feudal estates) in the district. Therefore, the book holds a special place in revealing Niš's social, economic, administrative, and demographic structure. However, the economic records in the book are kept in Arabic numerals. Therefore, as far as we can tell, the book has not been studied in detail. For this reason, this paper investigated the general situation of Niš and its rural areas in 1498. First, the book was transcribed, and then the data was classified and evaluated from demographic, economic, administrative, and agricultural perspectives. The results showed that Niš was a center with a classic Ottoman sanjak system.
