Travelling as a Cultural Activity: Framing Perceptions of Communication in Balkan Travel Vlogs

Abstract

This study examines travel vlogs as a cultural activity. It aims to determine how viewers interpret the narrative structure that the content creator establishes in travel vlogs. In this context, the video titled “Does It Make Sense to Visit the Balkan Countries on a Tour? What Are the Extra Costs? (We Visited 5 Countries in 7 Days Without a Visa)”, published on the YouTube channel Sonsuz Keşif, which was selected through purposive sampling, was analysed. The data obtained from the video were analysed using the MAXQDA programme. The video content was analysed using Fairclough’s discourse analysis approach, whilst the viewer comments posted beneath the video were analysed using content analysis. In this mixed-methods study, two main themes and 12 sub-themes were identified across viewer comments and video content. The study found that the video content covered historical and cultural information, cultural identity, food and drink, encouragement to travel, shopping budgets, and local beliefs. Viewer comments, meanwhile, focused on routes and guidance, aesthetics and viewing, budget, safety, culture and identity, and comfort and luxury. In conclusion, this research shows that while vloggers give cultural and affective meaning to their travels through the content they produce, viewers translate that meaning into practical questions for their own travel plans. This suggests that viewers actively consume vlog content and rework it to meet their travel-planning needs.
