A Painted Hunting Scene on Late Iron Age Pottery from the Van/Şabaniye Tumulus

Abstract

The Şabaniye Tumulus; located within the borders of the Edremit district of Van province, is the first tumulus to be excavated in the Lake Van Basin. Excavations carried out at the tumulus to date have yielded pottery forms belonging to the Late Iron Age (7th–4th centuries BC), comprising ten different typologies across seven different ware groups. Among this pottery, painted examples (triangle ware, festoon ware) constitute an important group of finds. The hunting scene found among the painted examples recovered during the 2022 excavations at the Şabaniye Tumulus has no parallel previously encountered at the tumulus. The silhouette-style human figure, depicted on horseback attacking a bovine (bull?) animal facing it with a spear in hand, probably represents a hunting scene set in a paradeisos. The aim of this study is to shed light on the Late Iron Age of the Lake Van Basin by comparing this scene with similar scenes found on pottery, seals, and bullae from the Persepolis reliefs and from stratified Late Iron Age archaeological centers. It is further suggested that this hunting scene in the paradeisos, an indicator of royal power, may exemplify a reflection of the royal lifestyle. Throughout the study, finds from contemporary centers are examined through typological and iconographic analysis. A comparative method was employed to interpret the hunting scene, and it is proposed that the scene can be dated to the 5th century BC.
