Reinterpreting the Istanbul Land Walls Basin: Ontological Continuity and the Critique of Authorized Heritage Discourse

Abstract

This study situates the Istanbul Land Walls as part of a larger hydrological network that extends beyond the fortification line itself, intersecting with the Lykos stream. It asks to what extent the current boundary-defined, monument-centric conservation framework accounts for this network. Accordingly, the study applies a qualitative, image-based cross-reading of cartographic and textual sources, from Late Antique accounts to contemporary spatial data. The findings show that the Land Walls historically co-developed with a wide range of hydrological, agricultural, religious, cultural, and economic functions, including water sources, bostans (vegetable gardens), cemeteries, and ayazmas, among others. Despite the modernization and urbanization that have intensified since the mid-twentieth century, traces of this network — bostans, surviving water elements, and a wider fabric of historic religious, funerary, civic, and social structures — persist on site today, if in diminished form. This multifaceted continuity is conserved only in a limited way under the boundary-defined, monument-centric conservation framework. Building on this, the study discusses whether small-scale, nature-based interventions in the design and materiality of the surrounding fabric could bring conservation, at the spatial level, into alignment with this network.
