Permeability Properties of Spunbond and Meltblown Nonwoven Fabrics used in Disposable Surgical Masks

Abstract

Disposable surgical masks are used especially during epidemics to prevent the transmission of viruses through droplets. Disposable surgical masks made from different materials are commercially available. In this study, the permeability properties of spunbond and meltblown nonwoven fabrics used in disposable surgical masks were investigated. For this purpose, the thickness, air permeability, water vapour permeability, and water vapour resistance properties of one Spunbonded and two Meltblown PP nonwoven fabrics were analyzed. Fabric F3, which had the highest thickness and weight, also had the lowest air and water vapour permeability values and the highest water vapour resistance value. Filtration is an important feature of disposable surgical masks. It can be said that the nonwoven fabric structure produced from the combination of F1 and F3 coded fabrics will offer greater protection, even if its comfort properties are not very good.
