Artificial Intelligence Use Policy

Artificial Intelligence Use Policy

General Principles

Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University International Journal of Art and Design recognizes the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in scientific research, academic writing, and artistic production. The journal upholds the principles of scientific originality, transparency, accountability, and publication ethics in the use of these technologies.

The journal's Artificial Intelligence Use Policy has been developed with reference to the principles of scholarly publishing established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), and the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME).

The use of AI-assisted tools must not compromise the scientific accuracy, originality, or ethical integrity of research and must not replace the responsibility of human researchers for scholarly evaluation and decision-making.

Authors' Responsibilities Regarding Artificial Intelligence Use

Authors may use AI-assisted tools in the preparation of their manuscripts. However, the use of such tools must not adversely affect the scientific originality, academic quality, or ethical integrity of the research.

AI tools may be used for language editing, translation, data processing, analysis, visualization, and other research-support activities. Nevertheless, authors remain responsible for verifying the accuracy, reliability, and scientific appropriateness of all AI-assisted content.

Authors must recognize that AI-generated or AI-assisted content may contain errors, omissions, misleading information, biases, or fabricated references. All scientific sources used in the manuscript must therefore be verified by the authors.

AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors. Full responsibility for the scientific content, research data, findings, interpretations, and ethical integrity of the manuscript rests with the human authors.

Disclosure of Artificial Intelligence Use

Authors who use generative AI tools during the preparation of their manuscripts must clearly disclose the name of the tool, the purpose of its use, and the extent to which it was employed.

When AI contributes directly to the research methodology, data analysis, generation of findings, visualization, or content creation, its use must be described in the relevant methodology section of the manuscript.

The use of conventional automated tools solely for spelling, grammar, and basic proofreading does not require disclosure. However, substantial text editing, translation, and content generation performed using generative AI tools must be disclosed.

The disclosure of AI use shall not, in itself, constitute grounds for either acceptance or rejection of a manuscript during the scholarly evaluation process.

Artificial Intelligence Use in Art and Design Research

The journal acknowledges that AI technologies may be used in research, design development, visual production, artistic practices, and creative processes within the disciplines of art and design.

When AI-assisted images, designs, animations, musical compositions, digital artworks, or similar content are used in a study, the production process and the contribution of AI must be clearly described.

AI-generated or AI-modified visual and audiovisual materials must not misrepresent research findings, create misleading impressions regarding authorship or ownership, or infringe upon the intellectual property rights of third parties.

In studies where AI use constitutes the primary research subject, the tools employed, production processes, and methodological choices must be described in sufficient detail to enable scholarly evaluation of the research.

Artificial Intelligence Use by Reviewers and Editors

Reviewers and editors are responsible for maintaining scientific impartiality, confidentiality, and academic integrity throughout the evaluation process.

Manuscripts under review must not be uploaded to AI systems that cannot guarantee confidentiality without the explicit permission of the authors. Unpublished research data, images, reviewer reports, and other confidential materials must be protected accordingly.

Reviewers must not delegate their responsibility for scholarly evaluation and decision-making to AI systems. Reviewers remain fully responsible for the scientific content and conclusions of their review reports.

Editors who use AI-assisted tools must ensure that the confidentiality and impartiality of the evaluation process are maintained. Final decisions regarding the acceptance or rejection of manuscripts must be made by human editors.

Scientific Originality, Copyright, and Ethical Responsibility

The use of AI-assisted tools does not exempt authors from their responsibilities concerning research integrity and publication ethics.

Authors must avoid plagiarism, data fabrication, data falsification, misleading image manipulation, and copyright infringement when using AI-generated texts, images, designs, data, code, or other content.

Authors are responsible for verifying the accuracy of AI-assisted content included in their manuscripts, providing appropriate citations and acknowledgments, and fulfilling all obligations relating to intellectual property rights.

Ethical Violations Related to Artificial Intelligence Use

Failure to disclose AI use when required, misleading presentation of AI-generated content, inclusion of fabricated references, or manipulation of research findings through AI technologies shall be evaluated as potential violations of publication ethics.

Depending on the nature and severity of the violation, authors may be requested to provide clarification or make corrections, and the manuscript may be rejected when deemed necessary.

Ethical concerns identified after publication shall be investigated in accordance with the journal's Ethical Principles and Publication Policy, and appropriate post-publication measures shall be implemented.

Artificial Intelligence Use Declaration

Authors who use generative artificial intelligence tools during manuscript preparation or research activities are required to disclose such use in accordance with the journal's Artificial Intelligence Use Policy.

Accordingly, authors must complete the Artificial Intelligence Use Declaration section during manuscript submission, clearly specifying the name of the AI tool used, the purpose of its use, and the extent to which it was employed.
