Evaluation of Philosophy Lesson’s Effectiveness in Secondary Education by Students’ Aspection

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine students’ perceptions towards effectiveness
of philosophy lesson in secondary education.
Philosophy lessons are held to help an individual express himself and have an
objective outlook. But, the educational system made philosophy lessons less important,
because New Examination System does not require much knowledge about Philosophy. A
society lacking proper knowledge of Philosophy cannot improve its own questioning and
searching skills. Deficiencies in Philosophy Education led to generating individuals who
never criticise, question or even think. The only thing Secondary Education in Turkey does is
prepare students for the University Entrance Examination. Therefore, It is seen that
philosophy lessons are far away from student’s interest. Besides, The Philosophy Curriculum
is a major factor engendering interest among students in Philosophy Lessons.
The study applied on 1500 high school’s students in İstanbul in the 2001-2002
academic year.
The questionnaire was applied to 100 high school students as a pilot study. The
questionnaire was given its final form as a result of taking students’ recommendations into
consideration. The questionaire form are organized in the five point Likert scala. As a result
of factor analysis, dimensions of the study were determined. Reliability of the test is given in
Crombach Alpha. Analysis of the data has been done by using SPSS programme. Percentage
and Frequency results were given; One Way Anova and T tests were used as statistical
methods. Significant differences were given in tables, interpreted, and recommendations have
been made in this respect.
