Daylight Performance Evaluation of Parametric Facades Inspired by Kinetic Systems

Abstract

Parametric facade models and daylight analyses have been performed. 4 different kinetic facade examples have been examined for parametric facade models The selected examples are; Penumbra – A Kinetic Daylighting and Shading System, One Ocean Thematic Pavilion, Brisbane Airport Parking Garage and HelioTrace. The similarities and differences between the examined kinetic facade examples and parametric facade models have been identified. Parametric facade models have been adapted for Istanbul Gelişim University building, which was modeled using Rhinoceros software. Illuminance analysis of the existing facade was performed using Honeybee software. Analyses were conducted on June 21 and December 21. Illuminance analyses of the adapted parametric facade were performed to assess the impact of these adaptations on the illuminance. The illuminance data of the adapted parametric facade were compared with the illuminance data of the existing facade. Out of the 48 parametric façade daylight analysis datas, 46 are closer to the optimum comfort condition.
