This policy aims to establish the ethical, scientific, and methodological standards regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in manuscripts submitted to the Mediterranean Journal of Humanities (MJH).
The primary objective of this policy is to ensure the correct, transparent, and responsible use of AI in academic writing and analysis, while safeguarding the principles of academic integrity, data privacy, impartiality, and scientific reliability.
The scope, forms of use, and capacities of AI tools will be regularly reviewed and revised in parallel with technological developments.
This policy is consistent with the ethical principles and publication policies of MJH and adopts the principles outlined in the Ethical Guidelines on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence prepared by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK).
1. Accepted Uses of AI
AI tools may only be used for language editing, spelling and grammar corrections, terminology consistency, formatting adjustments, and stylistic coherence.
The use of AI tools for generating academic content, constructing scientific arguments, conducting data analysis, or producing original research results is not permitted.
If AI tools are used in the preparation of a manuscript, this must be explicitly stated in the Ethics Statement section of the article.
2. Use in Editorial and Peer-Review Processes
MJH commits not to use AI tools at any stage of the manuscript evaluation process (preliminary review, peer review, or editorial decision-making).
All peer-review reports and editorial decisions are carried out exclusively by human expertise.
3. Principles Governing AI Use
Transparency and Accountability: Any use of AI must be clearly indicated. Authors must explicitly state the purpose and scope of AI use. MJH will publish this disclosure on the relevant page of the accepted manuscript.
Accuracy: The correctness of any content or suggestions generated by AI must be verified by the author against scholarly sources. Responsibility for any misleading, erroneous, or unverified information rests solely with the author.
Responsibility: Authors bear full scientific and ethical responsibility for all outputs derived from AI. They are required to carefully review AI-generated material and ensure compliance with academic standards.
Impartiality: Authors must disclose any potential conflicts of interest. Measures should be taken to minimize potential AI biases through supervision and verification processes.
Confidentiality and Data Security: The protection of personal data and information security must be prioritized in the use of AI. Data collection, storage, and processing must respect privacy rights and employ appropriate security safeguards.
Citation: AI tools must not be cited as sources in footnotes, bibliographies, or reference lists. Their use can only be declared in the Ethics Statement section.
4. Implementation and Sanctions
Manuscripts found to be using AI beyond the limitations described above will not be considered for peer review or will be rejected.
In cases where misleading or incomplete disclosures regarding AI use are detected, sanctions such as article retraction or author publication bans may be imposed.
All procedures are conducted in line with the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
