GENERAL GUIDELINES

Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim Journal of History of Medicine and Folk Medicine invites the submission of scientific original article, review and monograph on history of medicine, medical sociology, Folklore Studıes and folk medical practice, letter to editor with reference, editorial comment and discussion, besides folkloric method and product publicity.

The journal accepts only online submissions; applications by regular surface / air or electronic mail will not be accepted for evaluation.

Submissions are required to be inedited and unsent to another journal in order to be published. In the event that the papers contain (hard or soft copy) pre-published quotation, table, figure, illustration, etc. the author is supposed to obtain written permission from individuals or enterprises possessing the copyright and it should be notified in the paper. Previously presented or published abstracts of studies are admissible on condition that it is indicated in the manuscript.

After the scientific assessment, the authors’ names order in the submission is predicated on. Any modifications after this process are only possible contingent upon written statement and permission of all contributory authors.

Double blind peer review process

This journal uses double-blind review process. If the manuscripts meet the journal’s style, they are evaluated by the editor and at least two reviewer. If necessary, the requested changes are made by the authors and the article is published with the approval of the Editorial Board.

SCIENTIFIC AND ETHIC PRINCIPLES

The suitability of the articles to scientific and ethical rules is under the responsibility of all authors with all their results.
When applying to the journal, the Editorial Transfer Form is signed by the responsible author and the Author Contribution Form is signed by all authors who contributed in the article. Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim History of Medicine and Folk  Medicine Journal is published under CCBY-NC license. All rights are returned for the rejected documents.

Scientific principles

The author must have at least one of the following features and declare to accept the final version of the manuscript.

·         Constructing the hypothesis or idea of research and/or article

·         Planning methodology to reach the conclusions

·         Organizing, supervising the course of progress and taking the responsibility of the research/study

·         Taking responsibility in patient follow-up, collection of relevant biological materials, data management and reporting, execution of the experiments

·         Taking responsibility in logical interpretation and conclusion of the results

·         Taking responsibility in necessary literature review for the study

·         Taking responsibility in the writing of the whole or important parts of the study

·         Reviewing the article before submission scientifically besides spelling and grammar

·         Providing personnel, environment, financial support tools that are vital for the study

·         Biological materials, taking responsibility of the referred patients

In experimental cases( human and animal experiment) and cases from local studies which harvest personal information, “Ethics Committee Approval” should be obtained. Its presence should be indicated in the paper and the instrument of approval (to be sent in case editor’s request) should be maintained.

Ethical Responsibility

In all human studies, the researchers stated that in the “Materials and Methods” section, they conducted the study in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration Principles (http://www.wma.net/en/30publications/10policies/b3/index.html), and that the ethics committees of their institutions and “Informed consent an from the people who participated in the study.

If “Animal” is used in the study, in the “Materials and Methods” section of the article, animal rights are protected in accordance with the principles of Guidelines for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (http://www.nap.edu/catalog/5140.html). approval should be indicated.

-Ethics committee approval must be obtained for studies conducted in all disciplines including social sciences and for studies on clinical and experimental human and animals requiring ethical committee decision, this approval must be specified and documented in the article.
-The author must upload a copy of the document showing the Ethics Committee Decision to the system.
-An epidemiological study without an ethical committee decision is rejected without being taken into the evaluation process.
- There should be a statement about the research and publication ethics in the articles.
-In the studies requiring ethics board permission, information about the permission (name of the board, date and number no) should be included in the method section and also on the first / last page of the article.

In case studies, Informed Consent should be taken from the patients and stated in the manuscript. At the application stage of the manuscript, a copy of edit Informed consent should be submitted to the editor.
-In researches where it is not possible to decide whether an ethics board permit is required or not, an ethical permission document is not required from the Ethics Committee.

- Copyright regulations must be observed for the ideas and works of art used.

If the article contains a direct-indirect commercial link or financial support for the study, the authors should indicate to the editor on the presentation page that there is no commercial relationship with the commercial product, drug, company, etc. used, and if so, the relationship (consultant, other agreements).

SCREENING FOR PLAGIARISM

Lokman Hekim Journal use the iThenticate plagiarism detection tools during the editorial process (≤15%) and reject papers leading to plagiarism or self-plagiarism.

COPYRIGHT

 Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim Journal of History of Medicine and Folk Medicine is an open access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution.

LANGUAGE AND STYLE

The languages of the journal are Turkish and English with Latin letters. Turkish Dictionary of Turkish Language Society and relevant medical glossary should be grounded on for Turkish papers. Spelling mistakes and grammar errors would be corrected by the editorial board without making any change in content. If the article is written English language, authors should have their papers checked for linguistic accuracy by a native English speaker. For the language editing of the article and to get the “Formal Certificate of Language Control and Correction".

Correction notice

Readers and authors inform us if they find mistakes in an article. Because mistakes could affect the understanding of data or evidence presented. A separate corection notice is published. This correction notice is usually published with a DOI online. If the article infringes legal and ethical rights, it is removed.

AUTHOR GUIDELINES

The journal accepts only online submissions. The manuscripts should be submitted online at the address: https://dergipark.org.tr/mutftd

Manuscripts should be edited in Microsoft Word XP or upper versions by PC compatible computers. Use Calibri font, in 11 point size, 1.15 line spacing are accepted standarts. Being each of the following sections on separate pages,:1) Article Title 2) Abstract and Keywords 3) Main Body of the Text, 4) References, 5) Tables and/or Figures, 6) Footnotes and 7) Acknowledgements and Conflict of Interest.

Authors should give numbers to the pages consecutively at the beginning of the first page. Title Page should also be uploaded.

TITLE PAGE

Title page should contain the followings: 1) title 2) a short running title (not required if the main title is shorter than six words) 3) full names, degrees, and affiliations of all authors, 4) full name, titles, surface mailing address, telephone numbers and e-mail address of the correspondence author, 5) full name, fixed and mobile telephone numbers, e-mail address of the author responsible for correspondence, 6) full names and province of the supportive institutions and organizations, 7) type of the study (original article, review etc.), 8) if the paper is presented in a congress previously, the title, date and place of the congress, 9) Conflict of interest, 10)ORCID ID of all authors.

ABSTRACT AND KEY WORDS

It is recommended that the abstracts should be at least 150 and at most 250 words. Abstracts in research articles should consist of purpose, method, findings and conclusion sections.
In Reviews, such a partition may not be made.

Abstracts are compulsory for the Letters to Editor. At least three key words in both English and Turkish (only for article in Turkish) should be given. English key words should be in conformity with “Medical Subject Headings (MESH)” (vide: www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/MBrowser.html). Turkish key words should be verbatim translation of the MESH terms (only for article in Turkish).

MAIN BODY OF THE TEXT

Original Article

Abbreviations should be defined in parenthesis where the word to be abbreviated is first used in the text and followed throughout the whole text. There should be no abbreviation sentence initially.

Review

In this type of studies sectioning is up to authors.The main text should be limited to 4000 words, excluding tables, figures and references. Number of references should be 60 at most.Necessary permissions should be obtained for sources and materials such as figures, pictures used in the article.

Biographies, classic scientific/medical book introduction, corporation publicity, history of disease, medical themed art works and medical objects presentation constitute the monographic studies. In this type of studies sectioning is up to authors, too.

Monography is a study in which the question of a place, a work, an author, an event or a scientific field can be evaluated.Monographs in Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim Journal of History of Medicine and Folk Medicine should be specific to the history of medicine.

Letters to Editor

Letters are accepted to be no longer than 750 words, and not to exceed 5 references

Folkloric Method and Product Publicity

It is suggested that they should not exceed 1500 words

REFERENCES

References should be enumerated consecutively, in the order in which they are cited in the text and they should be indentified as ‘superscript’ sentence finally right after the punctuation mark. (example: sentence.1). Nonconsecutive reference numbers should be punctuated by comma; consecutive ones should be punctuated by, not comma, but hyphen. (examples: sentence.2,4; sentence.1-3 or sentence.2,4,6-9).

List of references should be consistent with the standards of International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html).

Firstly, authors’ full surname and then only initials of the names should be written. Following authors’ name, international abbreviation or acronym of the publishing journal should be added; after that, year of publication, volume and issue number, lastly, page numbers should be given. References in press should be indicated in parenthesis after the name of the journal as ‘in press’.

Up to three authors

In articles with up o three authors all authors’ names should be given:

Four or more authors

If a source has four or more authors, include only the first author’s last name and initials followed by et al.

Corporate as Author

List all authors (as last name and initials) and name of the corporate at the end.

TABLES AND FIGURES

All tables and figures should be labeled with a concise title and number in parenthesis and italic form at the end of the mentioned sentence:

Explanations should be added in the footnotes. Ensure that all images are in jepg format with at least 300 dpi. Used abbreviations should be explained just below the tables and figures.

FOOTNOTES

Footnotes should be edited within a page and double-spaced. Enlargement size and technique should be given for microscopic images.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Any financial and commercial supports; translation, statistics, technical supports for graphics, tables and figures etc., editorial support should be mentioned.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST

If any, authors’ conflict of interest should be stated.
