Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the Battle of Bouvines, which took place on July 27, 1214, between King Philip II ‘Augustus’ of France and the alliance opposing him, led by Holy Roman Emperor Otto IV and King John I of England, from political and military perspectives. The Battle of Bouvines was intense, with both sides gaining temporary advantages over the other. Ultimately, victory was secured by Philip Augustus with the retreat of Emperor Otto and the collapse of Dammartin’s last line of defense. With his decisive victory at Bouvines, Philip extended the war from the mainland to the British Isles, establishing absolute dominance in his kingdom. Detailed accounts of the battle are found in contemporary sources, such as the Gesta Philippi Augusti and Philippide by the eyewitness Guillaume le Breton, and the chronicle of the anonymous author from Béthune. The Battle of Bouvines, considered to have played a significant role in shaping the French national identity, stands as a remarkable example, particularly due to the rarity of such field battles during the period. Additionally, as the battle is extensively detailed by multiple chroniclers, it offers rich and important insights. The sources record numerous elements, ranging from the army formations used by the opposing sides to the equipment employed, thus providing an opportunity to study the methods of warfare in medieval Europe and to compare them with other military activities of the time. Politically, the Battle of Bouvines can be better understood through an analysis of its causes, process, and the political context of the period, as seen in the sources. This will allow for a more thorough evaluation of the political struggles between France and England, particularly in the early 13th century, through concrete examples.

Bouvines Muharebesi (27 Temmuz 1214) ve Sonuçlarının Siyasî ve Askerî Açıdan Bir İncelemesi
