Orta Çağ Devletleri Siyasî Sınırlara Sahip Miydi? Kudüs Haçlı Krallığı ve Müslüman Komşuları Arasındaki İktidar Limitleri, Kaleler ve Kolonizasyon Süreci

Abstract

Did Medieval States Have Political Borders? The Limits of Power, Castles and Process of Colonization between the Kingdom of Jerusalem and its Muslim Neighbours

Abstract

Long-standing debates on medieval states, mostly focusing on their nature, limits of authorities and how these structures formed, have been fueled by the rising popularity of the frontier discussions in the last fifty years, along a new path. The power of the “palace”, regarded as center of the authority had a very limited field of action, unlike modern states. This allowed it to be manipulated by a huge range of influential actor, ranging across topographical, socio-political, religious and ethno-cultural dynamics where these polities were located. This work focuses on the Kingdom of Jerusalem, more deeply shaped by external actors than many other medieval polities. By examining state-building from its earliest phase, this study examine how extensively the war zone between them and their Muslim neighbours determined their sphere of influences -that each party could reach- whether the medieval states has borderlines arguing centred on Kingdom of Jerusalem, and if not, what symbolic and practical methods were used for imagining political distinction. The analysis will consider two twelfth-century policies: the Ascalon strategy in relations with the Fatimids, and the creation of the Transjordan lordship, while highlighting the role of castles in this process. Reading the Kingdom of Jerusalem’s history as a colonization process carried out gradually with limited sources across 12th century highlights the role of castles, armies, and structures in the border regions. This study examines how power relations unfolded in a “frontier” world without fixed boundaries, showing where forces succeeded—or failed—in maintaining political and territorial separation.
