Loneliness as a Mediator in the Relationship Between Peer Bullying Victimization and Internet Addiction Among Adolescents

Abstract

Adolescents who experience bullying are more likely to use the Internet problematically. However, there is a gap in the literature regarding the processes behind this relationship. This cross-sectional study aimed to clarify the connection between Internet addiction and peer bullying victimization, specifically focusing on the mediating role of loneliness. Data were collected from 397 high school students aged 13–18 years using the Illinois Bullying Scale, Addiction Profile Index Internet Addiction Form, and UCLA Loneliness Scale Short Form. A mediation analysis was conducted using the SPSS PROCESS Macro (Model 4). The results revealed that loneliness partially mediated the relationship between bullying victimization and Internet addiction. Specifically, the mediation model demonstrated that 40.23% of the total effect of bullying victimization on Internet addiction was accounted for by loneliness. A noteworthy practical implication of this study is that interventions aiming to reduce internet addiction among bullied adolescents must prioritize strategies that alleviate social isolation and fulfill unmet social needs.
