Abstract

In Importance of Early Diagnosis in Fetal Acrania: the reports of two cases

Fetal acrania is a very rare and fatal anomaly in which the scalp bones are totally or partially absent and the brain is covered with a thin membrane or skin. In this report we presented two cases of fetal acrani one at 17 weeks and the other at 36 weeks of gestation by last menstrual period which both has not been followed up antenatally. One of the fetuses had a defect in vertebral colon together with acrania but the other had no additional anomaly. Acrania can be diagnosed by ultrasonography after the completion of cranial ossification. The early diagnosis is crucial in fetal acrania to decrease the costs, the number of interventions and the psychological burden to the family.
