Publication Policy
No article fee is charged from the authors who apply for an article to the Journal of Sociology. The texts submitted in accordance with the author guidelines and included in the scope of the journal are admitted in the evaluation process. Articles that do not comply with the spelling rules shared under the title of the announcement to the authors on the journal page will not be evaluated. Single-authored articles of researchers who are at least in the process of doctoral education are evaluated.
For the Journal of Sociology, double-blind peer review is processed in evaluation of the manuscripts. Accordingly, the Editorial Board makes the preliminary evaluation and the ones deemed appropriate are sent to the related referees from different institutions. The selection of the referees is based on the fields of expertise declared in YOK Academic (https://akademik.yok.gov.tr/AkademikArama/) , and the overlapping of the subject of the article and the referee's field of expertise is considered. Throughout the whole process of double blind peer review, the author and the referees are anonymous for each other.
The referee evaluation process is expected to be completed within 4 weeks, at longest. As a result of the peer-review, the decision on whether to publish the manuscript is notified to the authors – together with the requested changes and corrections, if any. Authors should upload the final version of the manuscript to the system within 3 weeks at the latest, by making any corrections and changes, as of the date of notification of the publication decision. The Editorial Board evaluates the submitted works for the last time and takes the final publication decision. The manuscripts that are not accepted for publication will not be returned to the authors. The authors are supposed to upload the Copyright Transfer Form to the system at the beginning of the apllication process. Articles published in the Journal of Sociology are licensed under the terms of Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International. On the condition of referring properly and not using for commercial purposes, all articles can be shared and adapted. The authors themselves are responsible for the articles published in the journal. The editorial board accepts no responsibility in this regard.
Full open access to the articles published in the journal is provided through DergiPark system, with no charge to authors.
Ethical Principles
Research and Publication Ethics
The Journal of Sociology has undertaken to apply publication and research ethics to the highest standards. These ethical principles are based on the standards of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)
(for detailed information, see https://publicationethics.org/guidance/Guidelines).
The Journal of Sociology expects all publication parties, including editors, referees, and authors, to adopt ethical rules. The rules that all stakeholders of the journal should base on have been prepared on the basis of the Code of Conduct and Principles of Transparency and Best Practice.
The Journal of Sociology ensures the production and distribution of unbiased information at a national and international level, based on scientific methods. In the research, which is expected to be conducted in line with the principle of transparency, participants and their privacy rights should be protected. If required, ethics committee approval should be obtained for research. Furthermore, it should be stated whether there is a conflict of interest in the research or not. All scientific and legal responsibilities regarding the ethical rules of the study belong to the author.
Submitted articles must be original, in compliance with copyright regulations, not previously published, and not currently undergoing evaluation. According to YÖK Scientific Research and Publication Ethics Directive (see https://www.yok.gov.tr/Sayfalar/Kurumsal/mevzuat/bilimsel-arastirma-ve-etik-yonetmeligi.aspx); in case of detection of other ethical violations mentioned in the same directive, especially plagiarism, forgery, distortion, republishing, slicing and unfair authorship, which are considered ethical violations, the application is not accepted. Again, the detection of the same violations is seen as a sufficient reason for rejecting the publication application at all stages of the evaluation process. Articles that do not comply with the specified publication and research ethics are removed from the publication.
Ethical Principles That Editors Must Follow
The editor of the Journal of Sociology carries out her/his duties based on the COPE Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors.
The editor and editorial board are responsible for the quality, originality, and ethical standards of the studies to be published in the journal. If each publication application requires research, the ethics committee report must be requested from the author(s). They must ask the author(s) to document the ethics committee's permission and indicate the article's approval. In addition, for each article, the editor should request the authors' contribution rates, support, and acknowledgment statements, if any, and conflict statements from the authors. The publication editor has to stay in touch with everyone involved, ensuring that the publishing processes are carried out on time and correctly. There should be an intermediary between the author and the referees in the double-blind refereeing process. Editors and members of the editorial board are based on the academic expertise of the referee candidates in appointing referees for articles. The editor and editorial board members of the Journal of Sociology, where the opinions of at least 2 referees are taken for each article, also pay attention to the selection of referees from different institutions. The referees who take part in the number of publications that have been completed after the referee evaluation processes are completed are listed in full on the cover page of the relevant issue of the Journal of Sociology.
The editor, who needs to take precautions regarding misconduct, violation of intellectual property rights, and violation of the mutual confidentiality of the names of authors and referees (double-blind peer-review process), considers consistent criticisms while preventing unscientific opinions. When it is necessary to explain, clarify, or apologize for the work, the responsibility belongs to the editor. As a result, the editor has full authority to accept or reject an article, taking into account the referee's evaluations.
Ethical Principles That Referees Must Follow
Journal of Sociology referees are required to fulfill their duties by following the COPE Ethical Guidelines for Peer Reviewers. First, the referees are expected to determine a neutral point of view. Reviewers should prioritize the confidentiality of both double-blind refereeing and information about the article. Second, the referees, who are expected to be objective regarding the publication, are obliged to notify the editor if they detect a conflict of interest. When the editor is notified of any situation that may hinder the referee's objective evaluation, the referee withdraws from evaluating the relevant article by the editor. Third, referees are required to notify the editor of any violation of copyright and ethical rules. Referees should not accept evaluation if they do not feel competent in terms of the subject of the article submitted for evaluation. Fourth, the referees are required to complete their evaluations within the time given to them by the editorial board and report their decision to the editor and editorial board. The referees are also expected to inform the editor and editorial board about the reasons for their decisions in the major and minor revisions, acceptance, and rejection decisions of the articles they are assigned for evaluation.
Ethical Principles That Authors Must Follow
It is assumed that the authors who submit their studies to the Journal of Sociology consider and accept ethical principles. Therefore, the consequences and responsibilities of violations belong to the authors. Authors cannot apply with an article that has been previously published or sent to another journal simultaneously for publication. Considering the efforts of the editor, members of the editorial board, and the referees assigned to the article, the withdrawal of an article whose referee process has been initiated by the authors is not accepted without a compelling reason.
Any work submitted to the Journal of Sociology must be checked for copyright compliance and originality by the authors. Authors should report any conflict of interest to the editor of the publication. Authors should avoid ethical violations such as plagiarism, forgery, distortion, republishing, slicing, and unfair authorship. If the authors require the research that is the subject of the publication in their publication applications, they must document the ethics committee report they have received from the relevant committees and commissions before the research begins. In addition, the authors must specify the ethics committee approval in detail (name of the committee, date, and number, etc.) in the method section of the article. Ethics committee permissions, voluntary consent forms, and the permissions of the materials used in the studies (visual, audio materials, scale, etc.) are expected from the authors to be complete. At the end of the article, the authors should include the contribution rates of the researchers, statements of support and acknowledgment, if any, and a statement of conflict. Finally, the Journal of Sociology expects the authors to be sensitive about the accuracy of the references and citations used in their studies. All in-text citations should be shown in the bibliography in an appropriate way according to the citation technique within the framework of the author guidelines adopted by the journal. However, unused sources should not be included in the bibliography. Authors are required to prepare their articles according to the spelling rules determined by the Journal of Sociology.
