Sınırlar Ötesi Bağlar: Hikâye Anlatıcısı John Berger’ın Türkçedeki Yolculuğu ve Alımlanışı

Abstract

Bu çalışma çeviri eserlerin okurlarda nasıl yankı bulduğunu, çevirilerle okurların buluştuğu noktaları anlamayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu amaçla, hikâye anlatıcısı John Berger’ın Türkçedeki yolculuğunu inceleyerek, yazarın Türkiye’deki okurlar için ne ifade ettiği, daha doğru bir ifadeyle, ilgili okurlarca hangi gerekçelerle okunduğu ve sevildiği gibi soruları cevaplamaya çalışır. İlk kez 1974’te Sanat ve Devrim, ardından 1978’de kendisine asıl bilinirliği kazandıran Görme Biçimleri eserlerinin aktarılmasından bu yana, neredeyse bütün eserleri Türkçeye çevrilmiş ve önemli bir kısmı en az iki baskı yapmış Berger’ın Türkiye’deki okurlarıyla özel bir bağ kurduğu düşüncesi, çalışmanın çıkış noktasını oluşturur. Bu doğrultuda öncelikle Berger’ın eserlerinin Türkçe çevirilerine dair bibliyografik bir liste çıkarılarak, yayıncı ve çevirmenlerine atıfla ilgili eserlerin genel bir çerçevesi çizilecektir. Yazarın Türkçeye çevrilme gerekçeleri, yayıncı ve çevirmenleriyle kurduğu bağlar ve eserlerinin sunuluşu yan metinler (çevre metin ve dış metinler) üzerinden incelenmeye çalışılacaktır. Ardından yazarın alımlanışını resmedebilmek amacıyla iki okur grubu için ayrı ayrı içerik analizine başvurulacaktır: İlk aşamada, bu örnekte poetika belirleyici okurlar arasında sayılacak tanıtım yazarlarının yazıları; ikinci aşamada ise genel okur kitlesinin Goodreads platformundaki yorumları analiz edilecektir. Böylelikle çalışma, Berger’ın çeviri eserleri aracılığıyla sınırlar ötesindeki okurlarıyla nasıl bir bağ kurduğu, ne tür gerekçelerle okunduğunu gözler önüne sererek, çevirilerin hitap ettikleri kitleler üzerindeki etkilerini incelemeye dönük bir örnek teşkil edecektir.

Cross-Border Connections: The Journey and Reception of the Storyteller John Berger in Turkish

Abstract

This study seeks to comprehend the impact of translated works on their readers and the intersections between translations and readers. This analysis explores the journey of the storyteller John Berger through his books in Turkish, aiming to elucidate the significance of the author to readers in Turkey, namely the rationale for his readership and admiration. This study begins with the premise that Berger, whose nearly all the books have been translated into Turkish and published in at least one edition since the initial release of Art and Revolution in 1974 and his seminal work Ways of Seeing in 1978, has forged a unique connection with readers in Turkey. Firstly, a bibliographic list of the Turkish translations of Berger's works will be presented, and a broad framework of the pertinent works will be established, referencing their publishers and translators. This analysis will examine the motivations for translating Berger’s books into Turkish, the relationships Berger formed with his publishers and translators, and the presentation of his works through paratexts (peri- and epitexts). Two separate content analysis will be employed to illustrate the readers’ reception: Initially, the works of reviewers, regarded among readers forming poetics in this instance, will be examined; subsequently, the comments of the public readership on the Goodreads platform will be investigated. The study will try to illustrate the influence of translations on the intended readership by examining how Berger engages with his readers in Türkiye through his translated books.
