Abstract

Abstract

Purpose – The aim of this study is to introduce to the literature a practical trust in government scale that can be used in studies of trust in government in Turkey, and whose psychometric properties have been empirically tested.
Methodology – After a semi-structured interview with 7 participants about trust in the state, an item pool was created. After receiving expert opinion for the items, the scale was applied to 251 participants. The data were analysed with SPSS.
Findings – As a result of the analyses, it was found that the Trust in Government Scale consists of four sub-dimensions: ‘trust in security and service’, ‘trust in transparency and equality’, ‘trust in government officials and economy’ and ‘trust in the legal system’. The internal consistency reliability of the scale was found to be satisfactory. In addition, the Generalised Trust Scale was applied to examine the criterion-related validity of the Trust in Government Scale and a significant positive relationship was found between the two scales.
Conclusions – As a result of the analyses, the psychometric properties of the Trust in Government Scale were empirically tested, and it was found to be a valid and reliable tool.
