Evaluation of the United Nations’ global nutrition and food security policies

Abstract

The United Nations Agriculture and Food Organization (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Food Program (WFP), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) produce various policies on global nutrition and food security and work by the policies. The study aims to determine and discuss the relevant policies of the United Nations to bring a new approach to the solution of hunger, famine, obesity, and food insecurity, which are among the most critical global problems of today. In the study, literature review and document review techniques, which are qualitative research methods, were used. When the findings of the study were examined, it was determined that the United Nations’ global nutrition and food security policies mostly focused on fair food sharing. In this context, the UN aims to reduce hunger by promoting food security and fair food sharing. However, the simultaneous existence of hunger and obesity shows that food sharing is unequal. The relevant institutions of the UN are working to solve these two problems. As a result of the research carried out by the UN between 1995 and 1997, it was determined that there are 824 million people who are hungry and malnourished. The UN aimed to reduce the number of hungry and malnourished people to 400 million in 2015, but this number increased to 795 million. In addition, there are great contradictions between the data of all reports announced after 2015, and some reports are heavily criticized. These justified criticisms stem from the suspicion that the data is related to obtaining the desired result by manipulating the data. As a result, while the UN’s development goals are expected to be concluded in 2030, the fact that they are far from the goals set by FAO shows that the relevant policies do not produce the desired results.

Birleşmiş Milletler’in küresel beslenme ve gıda güvencesi politikalarının değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Birleşmiş Milletlere bağlı Tarım ve Gıda Örgütü (FAO), Dünya Sağlık Örgütü (WHO), Dünya Gıda Programı (WFP) ve Uluslararası Tarımsal Kalkınma Fonu (IFAD) küresel beslenme ve gıda güvencesi konularında çeşitli politikalar üretmekte ve politikalara uygun çalışmalar yapmaktadır. Çalışma ile günümüzün en kritik küresel sorunların başında gelen açlık, kıtlık, obezite ve gıda güvencesizliğinin çözümüne yeni bir yaklaşım getirmek için Birleşmiş Milletler ‘in ilgili politikalarının belirlenmesi ve tartışılması amaçlamıştır. Çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden olan literatür tarama ve doküman inceleme teknikleri kullanılmıştır. Çalışma bulguları incelendiğinde Birleşmiş Milletler ’in küresel beslenme ve gıda güvencesi politikalarının büyük oranda adil gıda paylaşımına odaklandığı belirlenmiştir. Bu bağlamda BM açlığın azaltılmasını gıda güvencesini ve adil gıda paylaşımını teşvik ederek hedeflemektedir. Bununla birlikte açlık ve obezitenin aynı zamanda var olması gıda paylaşımının eşit olmadığını göstermektedir. BM’nin ilgili kurumlarının iki sorunun çözümü için çalışmalar yapmaktadır. BM‘nin 1995-1997 yılları arası yaptığı araştırmalar sonucu aç ve yetersiz beslenen 824 milyon insanın var olduğu tespit edilmiştir. BM 2015 yılında aç ve yetersiz beslenen insan sayısını 400 milyon seviyesine düşürmeyi hedeflemiş ancak bu sayı 795 milyona yükselmiştir. Buna ek olarak 2015 yılı sonrası açıklanan tüm raporların verileri arasında büyük çelişkiler mevcut olup bazı raporlar ise ağır şekilde eleştirilmektedir. Aslında bu haklı eleştiriler, verilerin manipüle edilerek istenilen sonucun elde edilmesi ile ilişkili olduğu şüphesinden kaynaklanmaktadır. Sonuç olarak BM’nin kalkınma hedefleri 2030 yılında sonuçlanmayı beklerken FAO’nun ortaya koyduğu hedeflerden oldukça uzak olması ilgili politikaların istenen sonucu vermediğini göstermektedir.
