Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the differences in effectiveness and efficiency between the Direct Instruction Method and the TouchMath Technique when applied through tablet computers and paper-and-pencil activities in teaching multiplication to students diagnosed with intellectual disabilities. Additionally, the study seeks to ascertain the opinions of teachers, parents, and students regarding these processes. The present study was conducted with a group of four students, aged 14-15, who had been diagnosed with intellectual disabilities. The study utilized an adaptive alternating treatments model from single-subject research designs. The findings of the research study indicated that the TouchMath Technique, when employed with both tablet computers and paper-and-pencil applications, yielded effective results in the instruction of fundamental multiplication operations. Furthermore, it was observed that the skills acquired by the students were not only generalizable but also sustainable through a variety of tools and environments. A subsequent analysis revealed that, with the exception of one participant, the TouchMath Technique demonstrated on tablet computers exhibited superior efficiency in terms of time and number of incorrect responses when compared to the paper-and-pencil application. The social validity data of the study indicated that the participating students, teachers, and parents expressed favorable opinions regarding the teaching process that utilized the TouchMath Technique.
