Retraction Note
This article has been retracted due to ethical concerns related to the publication of multiple articles derived from the same doctoral dissertation. It was identified that two separate articles were produced from the same dissertation and published in different journals, raising the risk of salami slicing. The co-author officially notified the journal that, in order to avoid any potential ethical violation on their behalf, they no longer wished to be listed as an author on the article.
Following this notification, the co-author withdrew their authorship approval, and maintaining an author’s name without their consent would not be scientifically or ethically acceptable. Since authorship modification under these conditions was not deemed appropriate, the article was withdrawn by the remaining author.
In accordance with the author’s request and in line with scientific research and publication ethics, the article has been formally retracted from the journal.
Abstract
The objective of this study is to evaluate the differences in effectiveness and efficiency between the Direct Instruction Method and the TouchMath Technique when applied through tablet computers and paper-and-pencil activities in teaching multiplication to students diagnosed with intellectual disabilities. Additionally, the study seeks to ascertain the opinions of teachers, parents, and students regarding these processes. The present study was conducted with a group of four students, aged 14-15, who had been diagnosed with intellectual disabilities. The study utilized an adaptive alternating treatments model from single-subject research designs. The findings of the research study indicated that the TouchMath Technique, when employed with both tablet computers and paper-and-pencil applications, yielded effective results in the instruction of fundamental multiplication operations. Furthermore, it was observed that the skills acquired by the students were not only generalizable but also sustainable through a variety of tools and environments. A subsequent analysis revealed that, with the exception of one participant, the TouchMath Technique demonstrated on tablet computers exhibited superior efficiency in terms of time and number of incorrect responses when compared to the paper-and-pencil application. The social validity data of the study indicated that the participating students, teachers, and parents expressed favorable opinions regarding the teaching process that utilized the TouchMath Technique.
