Ekmel Gecer is an Associate Professor of Social Psychology at Marmara University in Istanbul. He holds a PhD from Loughborough University and has a diverse academic background spanning psychology, communication, and theology. Dr. Gecer began his academic career as a lecturer in the Psychology Department at the University of Health Sciences in Istanbul, where he taught from 2019 to 2023, following a four-year tenure at Sakarya University (2015-2019). He has also delivered lectures at prestigious institutions across Europe, including the University of Dortmund (Germany), Würzburg University (Germany), Birmingham City University (UK), International Balkan University, and Sigmund Freud University (Vienna).
Dr. Gecer's academic journey began with studies in theology in Turkey, followed by a Master’s degree in Religious Psychology. His growing interest in communication and psychology led him to pursue postgraduate research in the UK. He completed a second Master’s degree in New Media, Governance, and Democracy at Leicester University in 2009, with a thesis on "Political Communication and Psychology." During this time, he also contributed regularly to Turkish periodicals and newspapers.
Dr. Gecer’s research interests span a wide range of topics, including psychology, politics, media, and communication. He has published numerous articles in leading scientific journals and presented his work at national and international conferences. His research specializes in social psychology mainly communication, media, cyber psychology, and political psychology. He has also contributed significantly to projects focused on multiculturalism and psychology.
