Ekmel Gecer is holding a PhD from Loughborough University in media-politics and journalism studies. After working at the Communication Faculty of Sakarya University for four years (2015-2019), he became a lecturer at the Psychology Department of the University of Health Sciences (2019-2023). He is currently an associate professor of social psychology at Marmara University. He also delivered lectures at Universitaet Dortmund/Institut Für PsyChoLoGie an Der Tu DortMund (Germany), Sigmund Freud University (Vienna), Sehir University and İbni Haldun.
Gecer has studied theology in Turkey and has an MA in Religion Psychology. Ekmel Gecer decided to pursue postgraduate research into Communication and Pscyhology at a UK University while being a regular contributor to Turkish periodicals and newspapers. He finished his second MA in New Media, Governance & Democracy from Leicester University in 2009 with a thesis on “political communication and psychology".
Ekmel Gecer has explored a broad range of psychology, politics, media and communication issues and presented papers in national and international conferences (UK, America, Spain, Sweden, Portugal etc.) that specialise in cultural psychology, political communication and psychology, media-democracy relations, media and identity debates. GECER contributed to many projects mostly related to multiculturalism and psychology. He has also researched a wide range of new/digital media psychology, political psychology and sociology of news issues. He is the author of six books: (1) Media and Popular Culture: Soap Operas, TV and Society, (2) Understanding Turkish Media: A Democratic Structure is Possible? (3) Paradoxal Defeat of Authenticity: Essays on Communication, Culture and Politics, (4) Social Media and Communication Psychology: Personality, Polarization and Algorithm and (5) Handbook of Social Psychology (edited with Meryem SERDAR), (6) Media, Popular Culture and Psychology. He is nowadays working on his three new books about intercultural communication and psychology and cyberpsychology.
