THE ‘GREAT MOTHER’ IMAGE IN D. H. LAWRENCE'S A COLLIER'S FRIDAY NIGHT

Abstract

D. H. Lawrence left a legacy within a wide range of genres including novels, short stories, poetry, essays and theatre. Perhaps the one writerly aspect overshadowed by his identity as a novelist has been his career in playwriting although there are thematic continuities between the two. Chief among the influences between his plays and fiction is the archetypal relationship between mothers and sons, which attracts a frequent interest across the writer’s thematic choices. As a playwright and a novelist, Lawrence often explored the complex nature of this relationship within an imaginative framework. A Collier’s Friday Night, considered one of the best of Lawrence’s plays, will be analysed in this study around the context of the “great mother” symbol that the author often revisits. The study aims to frame a context on Lawrence as a playwright and build a perspective of his playwriting based on archetypal analysis.

Abstract

Modernist İngiliz edebiyatının önde gelen figürlerinden D. H. Lawrence roman, öykü, şiir, deneme ve tiyatro türlerini içeren geniş bir çerçevede yazınsal bir miras bırakmıştır. Türler arası yolculuğu dikkat çekici düzeyde renkli olan yazarın, her ne kadar edebiyat tarihçiliğinde çoğunlukla romancı kimliğiyle konumlandırılsa da farklı temsil ve anlatı biçimlerinde yetkinlik gösterdiği yadsınamaz. Yazarın romancı kimliğinin gölgesinde belki de en çok kalan yanı onun aslında romancılığını da etkileyen tiyatro yazarlığı olmuştur. Lawrence’ın hem romanlarında hem de tiyatro oyunlarında benzer konulara odaklandığı görülür. Bu konulardan belki de en çarpıcı olanı, yazarın kendi yaşamından da izler taşıyan anne-oğul ilişkisidir. Tiyatro yazarı ve romancı olarak Lawrence, bu ilişkinin karmaşık yapısını sıklıkla kurgusal bir zeminde tartışmaya açmıştır. Bu çalışmada, Lawrence’ın oyunlarının en iyilerinden kabul edilen Bir Maden İşçisinin Cuma Akşamı, yazarın sonraki eserlerinde de görülen “ulu ana” sembolü bağlamında ele alınacaktır. Çalışmanın amacı, roman yazarı olarak tanınan Lawrence’ın tiyatro yazarı kimliği hakkında bir bağlam inşa etmek ve bu kimliğe ilişkin arketipsel analiz odaklı bir perspektif oluşturmaktır.
