Abstract

REFLECTION OF GOTHIC FICTION’S WOMAN CHARACTERISTICS IN TRANSLATION: EDGAR ALLAN POE’S “THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER”

Abstract

Literary texts reflect the characteristics of the period in which they were written, and the translation of these texts contains elements reflecting the characteristics of the period in which the source text originated. Hence, translated texts have an essential mission of introducing the characteristics of the period in which the source text was written to the target audience. Thus, this study aims to find out how the characteristics of Madeline, the only woman character in Edgar Allan Poe’s an essential example of gothic fiction titled “The Fall of the House of Usher”, were transferred to two Turkish translations within the framework of Eugene Albert Nida’s (1964) formal and dynamic equivalence and the characteristics attributed to women in gothic fiction. According to the findings, the main character's traits, such as being silent, passive, defenseless, helpless, domestic and traditional, were emphasized in the source text. Regarding how the translators reflected these characteristics, both translators transferred Madeline's basic characteristics to the target texts as they were in the source text. Ultimately, it was concluded that both translators prioritized fluency and naturalness in the target text, generally favoring dynamic equivalence over formal equivalence.
