My name is Rustam Shukurov, and I am an Orientalist and Byzantinist by training. I earned my academic degrees — Doctor, Doctor habilitatus and Professor in Medieval history — at the History Faculty of Moscow State University in Russia. I worked there as a teacher and researcher for more than thirty years, from 1990 until 2023. At present, I am a researcher at the Byzantine Department of the Institute for Medieval Studies at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna.
Over the course of these decades, I have participated in a number of major projects and developed research interests that revolve around the history and culture of Byzantium and its Asian neighbours in their wider setting. I am particularly drawn to the later Byzantine period, to Christian–Muslim relations between the twelfth and the fifteenth centuries, to the history of Seljuk Anatolia and Mongol Iran, to the early Ottomans, and to the Black Sea world.
In particular, I have published three monographs. The first, titled The Grand Komnenoi and the Orient, appeared in 2001. It traced the political and social connections between the Empire of Trebizond and the Orient. The second, The Byzantine Turks, published by Brill in 2016, introduced the concept of “Byzantine Turks” and examined their place within the late Byzantine world. My most recent book, Byzantine Ideas of Persia, published by Routledge in 2024, focused on the presence of Persia in Byzantine religiosity, culture, and society, and placed it within the framework of Byzantine cultural memory.
