Matematik Olimpiyatlarına Hazırlanan Ortaöğretim Öğrencilerinin Karşılaştığı Güçlüklerin İncelenmesi

Abstract

Bu araştırmanın amacı, matematik olimpiyatlarına hazırlanan ortaöğretim düzeyindeki öğrencilerin yaşadığı zorlukların incelenerek tespit edilmesidir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubu, 2024/2025 eğitim öğretim yılında İstanbul ilinde öğrenim görmekte olan ve matematik olimpiyatlarına hazırlanan 20 öğrenciden oluşmaktadır. Seçilen öğrenciler hazırlık sınıfı, 9. sınıf ve 10. sınıf düzeyindedir. Katılımcılar seçilirken amaçlı örnekleme modellerinden ölçüt örnekleme modeli kullanılmıştır. Bu çalışma belli bir konuyu ve durumu derinlemesine incelemeyi amaçladığı için nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden durum çalışması yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Veriler, katılımcılara verilen 10 soruluk öğrenci görüşme formlarından oluşturulan dokümanlarla toplanmıştır. Görüşme formu, öğrencilerin süreçteki yaşadığı zorlukların tespit edilmesi ve motivasyon kaynaklarının belirlenmesini amaçlayan sorulardan oluşmaktadır. Verilerin analizi içerik analizi yöntemiyle yapılmıştır. Katılımcıların cevapları kod, kategori ve temalar kullanılarak gruplandırılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda öğrencilerin matematik olimpiyatlarına hazırlık sürecinde en çok zorlandığı ders konularının geometri, sayılar teorisi ve kombinatorik olduğu belirlenmiştir. Bunun yanı sıra, öğrencilerin matematik olimpiyatlarına hazırlık sürecinde en çok zorlandığı yaşantıların olimpiyat çalışmalarına çok fazla zaman ayırmak, sosyalleşememek ve soruların çözümü bulunamadığında yetersiz hissetmek olduğu bulgularına ulaşılmıştır. Ayrıca verilen cevaplar doğrultusunda öğrencilerin sosyal, duygusal, bilişsel ve akademik zorluklarla karşılaştığı ve bu süreçte desteğe ihtiyaçları olduğu saptanmıştır.

An Examination of the Challenges Faced by Secondary School Students Preparing for Mathematics Olympiads

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine and identify the challenges experienced by secondary school students preparing for mathematics olympiads. The study group consists of 20 students preparing for mathematics olympiads in Istanbul during the 2024/2025 academic year. The selected students are from preparatory classes, 9th grade, and 10th grade. Criterion-based purposeful sampling, one of the purposeful sampling models, was used to select the participants. Since this study aims to examine a specific topic and situation in depth, the case study method, one of the qualitative research designs, was employed. Data were collected using documents composed of student interview forms containing 10 questions. The interview form was designed to identify the difficulties experienced by students during the preparation process and to determine their sources of motivation. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Participants’ responses were grouped using codes, categories, and overarching themes. The study found that the subjects students struggled with the most during the mathematics olympiad preparation process were geometry, number theory, and combinatorics. In addition, the experiences students found most challenging included devoting excessive time to olympiad preparation, lack of social interaction, and feelings of inadequacy when unable to solve problems. Furthermore, the responses indicated that students faced social, emotional, cognitive, and academic challenges and required support throughout the preparation process.
