The Theme of Illness in the Novel Titled Six Years Farewell to My Sister of Charlotte Link

Abstract

The research topic of this study is an analysis of Charlotte Link’s prose work Six Years. Farewll to My Sister (2014), one of the important representatives of 21st-century postmodern German literature. This work, based on Charlotte Link’s own life experiences, falls within the genre of autobiographical novels. The narrator of the novel is a female writer, just like Link herself. In this work, written from a first-person perspective, the author addresses his sister Franziska’s six-year battle with cancer, the traumatic experiences endured during this painful process, the solidarity within the family, and the feelings of helplessness, pain and grief. The title of the novel reflects the sister figure’s struggle with illness and her defeat in this struggle. The aim of this study is to analyse how the theme of illness is represented in the novel, what concepts it is associated with, what transformations it brings about in the characters, and what function it serves. The structure of the study begins with a general overview of the author and the work, followed by an analysis of the main themes and figures in the work. In accordance with the research subject and purpose, the article employs author- and text-focused research methods, primarily positivist-biographical criticism. In the thematic analysis of the novel, character analyses are prioritised. The author-narrator is examined in relation to the sister figure, in terms of their status as patients and relatives of patients. Furthermore, the plot, concepts of time and space in the novel, and their meaning and function in the novel are addressed. In this way, the study finds that the phenomenon of illness must be analysed not only from the perspective of the patient, but also from the perspectives of the patient and their relatives, in terms of its individual and social dimensions. In this respect, the study has the potential to support Sustainable Development Goal 3.3: Good Health and Well-being. The importance and original value of this work lies in the fact that it is the first scientific study conducted in Turkey and abroad on this novel, which has not yet been translated into our language. Charlotte Link’in Sechs Jahre. Der Abschied Vonmeiner Schwester Adlı Romanında Hastalık Teması

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın araştırma nesnesi, 21. yüzyıl postmodern Almanca edebiyatın önemli temsilcilerinden olan Charlotte Link’in Sechs Jahre. Der Abschied von meiner Schwester (2014) adlı düzyazı eserinin analizidir. Charlotte Link’in kendi yaşam deneyimlerine dayanan bu eser, otobiyografik roman türüne girmektedir. Romanın anlatıcısı, Link’in kendisi gibi kadın bir yazardır. Yazar, ben-anlatıcı perspektifini kullandığı bu eserinde, kız kardeşi Franziska’nın kanserle altı yıl süren mücadelesini, bu sancılı süreçte yaşanan travmatik deneyimleri, aile içindeki dayanışmayı, çaresizlik, acı ve yas duygularını ele almıştır. Romanın başlığı, kız kardeş figürünün hastalıkla mücadele sürecini ve bu mücadeleyi kaybedişini yansıtır. Çalışmanın amacı, romanda hastalık temasının nasıl temsil edildiğini, hangi kavramlarla ilişkilendirildiğini, figürlerde ne gibi dönüşümlere yol açtığını ve nasıl bir işlev üstlendiğini çözümlemektir. Çalışmanın rotası, ilk olarak yazara ve esere genel bir bakış ile başlayıp ardından eserdeki ana temanın ve figürlerin çözümlenmesi şeklinde belirlenmiştir. Araştırma nesnesine ve amacına uygun olarak makalede, pozitivist-biyografik eleştiri başta olmak üzere, yazar ve metin odaklı araştırma yöntemleri kullanılmıştır. Romanın tematolojik analizinde figür çözümlemeleri ön planda tutulmuştur. Kız kardeş figürü ile yazar-anlatıcı, hasta ve hasta yakınları olmaları bakımından incelenmiştir. Ayrıca romandaki olay örgüsü, zaman ve mekân konseptleri ve bunların romandaki anlam ve işlevleri ele alınmıştır. Bu şekilde çalışmada, hastalık olgusunun yalnızca hasta üzerinden değil, hasta ile hastanın yakınlarının bakış açılarından, bireysel ve sosyal boyutları ile analiz edilmesi gerektiği bulgulanmıştır. Bu bakımdan çalışmanın, Sürdürülebilir Kalkınma İçin Küresel Hedefler’in (SKH) 3.3. sağlıklı toplum hedefine destek sağlama potansiyeli bulunmaktadır. Çalışmanın önemi ve özgün değeri, henüz dilimize çevrilmemiş bu roman üzerine hem Türkiye’de hem yurtdışında bu açıdan yapılan ilk bilimsel çalışma olmasıdır.
