The Resistance Level of the German Cockroach (Blatella germanica L.) to Alpha-cypermethrin

Abstract

This study aims to determine the resistance levels of German cockroach (Blattella germanica) populations to alpha-cypermethrin. A susceptible laboratory-origin population with no insecticide exposure and local populations collected from the Altındağ and Çankaya districts of Ankara were used. Alpha-cypermethrin was applied to the cockroaches at different doses (1–100 ng/µL) by topical application, and individuals were monitored for knock-down and mortality rates between 30 min and 24 h post-treatment. The results revealed that the susceptible population exhibited rapid knock-down and mortality responses at low doses, whereas the Çankaya and especially the Altındağ populations exhibited increased resistance. According to probit analysis, the LD₅₀ value of the susceptible population was calculated as 1.64 ng/, while the LD₅₀ values for the Çankaya and Altındağ populations were 16.32 ng/µL and 28.43 ng/µL, respectively. These findings indicate a significant development of resistance to alpha-cypermethrin in B. germanica populations and reveal variation in resistance levels among different local populations. The study emphasizes the importance of insecticide rotation and integrated control strategies in pest management programs.
