Graphic Organizers And Examining of Their Usage in High School Physics Textbooks

Öz

Graphic organizers are teaching and learning tools that show organization of concepts as well as relationships between them into a visual format. The use of graphic organizers in the textbooks helps students not only understand the theories presented in the text meaningfully and but also construct the relationships among the concepts of the topic. In this regard, this study aimed to determine how often the graphic organizers were placed in high school physics textbooks, and what kinds of graphic organizers were placed in these textbooks. A concept map concerning the classification of graphic organizers was developed firstly. Then, four physics textbooks, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades, certificated by the Board of Education and Training were analysed by taking into account the concept map prepared. It was found that a total of 42 graphic organizers were placed in all textbooks. Finally, some recommendations for incorporating graphic organizers in physics classes were noted
