Sosyal Medya Dış Görünüş Algısı: Dış Görünüşle İlgili Sosyal Medya Bilinci Ölçek Geliştirme

Öz

Sosyal medya bağımlılığı, bireyin günlük yaşamını olumsuz etkileyecek düzeyde sosyal medya kullanımıyla karakterize edilir. Bu durum, bireyin sosyal medya kullanımını kontrol edememesi ve platformlarda oluşturulan yapay görsellerdeki idealize edilmiş görünüşlere benzemek amacıyla estetik müdahalelere yönelmesiyle sonuçlanabilir. Bu bağlamda, sosyal medyanın dış görünüm algısı üzerindeki etkilerini değerlendirebilecek bir araç olarak Dış Görünüşle İlgili Sosyal Medya Bilinci Ölçeği (DGİSMBÖ) önemli bir yere sahiptir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, bireylerin dış görünüşle ilgili sosyal medya bilincini ölçmeyi amaçlayan yeni bir ölçek geliştirmektir. Araştırmada, bireylerin dış görünüşü ile ilgili sosyal medya bilinci algılarına yönelik bir ölçme aracı geliştirme çalışması yapılmıştır. “Dış Görünüşle İlgili Sosyal Medya Bilinci” algı ölçeğinin yapısının belirlenmesi amacıyla açımlayıcı faktör analizi yapılmış, ardından yapısının geçerliliğini test etmek için doğrulayıcı faktör analizi uygulanmıştır. İfadelerin güvenilirliğinin belirlenmesi için Cronbach’s Alpha değeri hesaplanmıştır. Genel ölçek düzeyi incelendiğinde “Dış Görünüşle İlgili Sosyal Medya Bilinci” düzeylerinin 1,98±0,92 seviyesinde ve düşük düzeyde olduğu belirlenmiştir. Dış görünüşle ilgili sosyal medya bilinci düzeylerini belirlemeye yönelik geliştirilen ölçekle, katılımcıların sosyal medya kullanımının bireylerin dış görünüş algısını etkileyebileceği ve bu algının cinsiyet, yaş, gelir ve eğitim gibi faktörlere bağlı olarak değişebileceğini ortaya koymaktadır.

Social Media Appearance Perception: Development of A Social Media Awareness Scale on Appearance

Abstract

Social media addiction is characterized by the use of social media to a degree that negatively affects an individual's daily life. This condition may result in an inability to control social media usage, and a tendency to seek aesthetic procedures to resemble the idealized appearances portrayed in artificially created visuals on these platforms. In this context, the Social Media Appearance Awareness Scale (SMAAS) holds significant importance as a tool for assessing the impact of social media on perceptions of physical appearance. The aim of this study is to develop a new scale to measure individuals’ social media consciousness related to their appearance. A measurement tool was designed to evaluate individuals’ perceptions of appearance-related social media consciousness. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was conducted to determine the structure of the "Social Media Appearance Awareness Scale", and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was performed to validate its structure. Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient was calculated to assess the reliability of the statements. An examination of the overall scale revealed that the levels of "Social Media Appearance Awareness Scale" were found to be 1.98±0.92, indicating a low level. The developed scale highlights that participants’ use of social media can influence their perceptions of appearance and that these perceptions may vary based on factors such as gender, age, income, and education.
