The Study of the Effect of Socio-Economic Level and Parents’ Educational Status on Creative Thinking Skills of Six-Year-Old Children
Abstract
This study was planned to determine the effect of socio-economic level and parents’ educational status on
creative thinking skills of six-year-old children. The population of the study was comprised of six-year-old children
who receive education at primary school kindergarten stage from different socio-economic backgrounds in Ankara.
The sampling consisted of 300 children showing regular development conditions from 8 primary school kindergarten
stage. The participants who were assumed to represent lower, middle and higher socio-economic levels were chosen
using random sampling method. In this study, a Survey was used to gather information about the children and their
families, and in order to determine creative thinking levels of children The Test for Creative Thinking–Drawing
Production (TCT-DP) which was developed by Urban & Jellen (1996) and whose validity and reliability for sixyear-old
Turkish children was conducted by Can-Yaşar (2009) was used. The relationship between creative thinking
skills of children and socio-economic level and parents’ educational levels were analyzed using Kruskall-Wallis H
test. In conclusion, socio-economic level and parents’ educational levels were found to create a meaningful
difference on creative thinking skills of the children (p < 0,001).
