The Effect of Environmental Education Projects on Third Grade Primary School Students’ Attitudes towards Forest

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the third class students’ attitudes on forest using the technique of nature education in the city center Primary School of Samsun. This study is carried out with 39 third class students who study in a Primary School in Samsun city center between the education years of 2016-2017 and 2015-2016. In this research Attitude Scale towards Forest, developed by Demirkaya and Genç was used as the data collection instrument. Attitude Scale towards Forest contains 36 items and its’ which Cronbach Alpha Coefficient was calculated as 0.90. The data obtained from the study were analyzed with descriptive statistics. According to the results of the analysis, post-test and retention test scores of the students showed a statistically significant increase compared to the pre-test scores. The gender variable did not make any difference on the students' attitude scores towards forests. It was determined that the attitudes of the students who had planted at least one sapling were higher than those who did not plant saplings. From these findings, it can be said that the nature education projects have developed positive attitudes towards forest for the students.

İlkokul Üçüncü Sınıf Öğrencilerinin Ormanlara Yönelik Tutumlarında Doğa Eğitimi Projelerinin Etkisi

Öz

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Samsun il merkezindeki ilkokul üçüncü sınıf öğrencilerinin bir doğa eğitimi projesi kapsamında ormanlara ilişkin tutum değişimlerinin belirlenmesidir. Çalışma 2015- 2016 ve 2016-2017 eğitim ve öğretim yılında Samsun il merkezinde yer alan bir ilkokulun üçüncü sınıflarında öğrenim gören toplam 39 öğrenci ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Demirkaya ve Genç tarafından geliştirilen Cronbach Alfa Katsayısı 0,90 olan ve 36 maddeden oluşan Ormana İlişkin Tutum Ölçeği veri toplama aracı olarak kullanılmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen veriler betimsel istatistiklerle analiz edilmiştir. Analiz sonuçlarına göre öğrencilerin son test ve kalıcılık testi puanlarının ön test puanlarına göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir artış gösterdiği tespit edilmiştir. Cinsiyet değişkeninin öğrencilerin ormanlara ilişkin tutum puanları üzerinde bir farklılık meydana getirmediği ve daha önce en az bir fidan dikmiş olan öğrencilerin ormana ilişkin tutumlarının fidan dikmemiş olan öğrencilere göre daha yüksek olduğu belirlenmiştir. Bu bulgulardan yola çıkılarak doğa eğitimi projelerinin öğrencilerde ormana ilişkin olumlu tutumlar geliştirdiği söylenebilir.
