Exploring The Visual Literacy Levels of Social Studies Teacher Candidates

The current study aims to examine the visual literacy levels of pre-service social studies teachers according to the variables of gender, grade level, duration of social media use, and the most frequently used social media application. The study was conducted with a descriptive survey model. Participants were determined by convenience sampling method. The participants of the study consisted of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade pre-service social studies teachers. The data were collected with the Visual Literacy Scale developed by Aslan and Nalinci (2014) for university students. Unrelated samples t-test and one-way analysis of variance were used to analyze the data. Results show that pre-service social studies teachers’ visual literacy levels were high in the overall scale and its sub-dimensions. It was concluded that pre-service social studies teachers’ visual literacy levels did not differ statistically significantly according to gender and grade level variables. According to the duration of social media use and the most frequently used social media application, it was concluded that the visual literacy levels of the participants showed statistically significant differences. Bu çalışmada, sosyal bilgiler öğretmen adaylarının, görsel okuryazarlık düzeyleri, cinsiyet, sınıf düzeyi, sosyal medya kullanma süresi, en sık kullandığı sosyal medya uygulaması değişkenlerine göre incelenmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Çalışma betimsel tarama modeli ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Katılımcılar, kolay ulaşılabilir örnekleme yöntemi ile belirlenmiştir. Çalışmanın katılımcıları 1., 2., 3. ve 4. sınıf sosyal bilgiler öğretmen adaylarından oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın verileri Aslan ve Nalinci (2014) tarafından üniversite öğrencileri için geliştirilen Görsel Okuryazarlık Ölçeği ile toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde ilişkisiz örneklemler t-testi ve tek yönlü varyans analizi kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın bulgularına göre, sosyal bilgiler öğretmen adaylarının görsel okuryazarlık düzeylerinin ölçek genelinde ve alt boyutlarında yüksek olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Sosyal bilgiler öğretmen adaylarının görsel okuryazarlık düzeylerinin cinsiyete ve sınıf seviyesi değişkenine göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farklılaşmadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Sosyal medya kullanma süresine göre ve en sık kullanılan sosyal medya uygulamasına göre ise katılımcıların görsel okuryazarlık düzeylerinin istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farklılık gösterdiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

Sosyal Bilgiler Öğretmen Adaylarının Görsel Okuryazarlık Düzeylerinin İncelenmesi
