Effect of Different Cutting Times on Forage Quality Values in Some Winter Climate Cereal Species

Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted at Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University, Faculty of Agriculture, Field Crops Research and Application Area during the 2020-21 crop season. It aimed to determine the changes in forage quality values of four winter cereal species (wheat, barley, oat, and triticale) based on two different cutting times (flowering period and normal harvest). Materials and Methods: The species used in the study are Ibaiona in barley, Balkoni in wheat, Ayşehanım in triticale and Kahraman in oats. The trial was established in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications according to the split plot design. The variance analysis of the data collected as a result of the study was performed in the JMP statistical program. Tukey Post Hoc test was used to group the means for multiple comparisons. Results: According to the findings, it was determined that the effect of cutting time and grain species on the examined traits was statistically significant, while the effect of cutting time x species interaction was significant only on crude protein ratio, NDF, dry matter intake value and relative feed value traits. In the cutting time application, it was observed that the cutting time in the flowering period was higher than the straw in terms of all other characteristics except NDF value. Conclusion: Among the cereal species, barley has been determined to have better quality values than the other three species. In terms of the cutting time x species interaction, it was concluded that the flowering period x barley interaction had higher values in terms of other characteristics except NDF and ADF. As a result, it was concluded that barley harvested during flowering period is the most suitable species in terms of feed values in Kahramanmaraş ecological conditions.
