The effect of individualism and collectivism on the approach of fatalism in teachers

Abstract

Although fatalism is a concept that exists in all societies, this concept emerges as an important element that shapes people's perspectives on life and behaviors of individuals, especially in societies where religious understandings are more prominent. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the concepts of individualism and collectivism and the tendency towards fatalism. Within the scope of the research, a questionnaire was applied to 154 high school teachers working in public schools in Denizli. It was examined whether there was a significant difference between the situation of the teachers participating in the study living with their families and their fatalism tendencies, and it was seen that the fatalism tendency of the teachers living in different cities with their families was higher than the fatalism tendency of the teachers living with their families. In the study, it was also investigated whether there was a relationship between the total working years and the fatalism tendency, and it was found that the fatalism tendency of the teachers who completed 15 years in their profession was higher, and that the fatalism tendency decreased in the periods after 15 years. Also, no difference was found between the mean fatalism scores of male and female teachers in the study. One of the most striking findings of the study is that the individualistic attitude has a higher and positive relationship with the fatalism tendency than the collectivist attitude. Despite the fact that Turkey is observed as a more collectivist society in the studies, the higher individualistic attitudes in this study is an important result for the study.
