THE ECONOMIC HARDSHIP SCALE FOR ATHLETES (EHSA): A RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY STUDY

Öz

The aim of this study was to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool to identify the economic challenges faced by amateur athletes and to evaluate the impact of these challenges on their athletic careers. The research adopts a methodological design with a descriptive approach and was carried out in five stages. Initially, a comprehensive literature review was conducted to establish the conceptual framework, and an item pool was created accordingly. Expert opinions were sought to assess content validity, and the relevant items were included in the draft scale. The draft was administered to 418 amateur athletes, and Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was performed. Subsequently, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was conducted with a separate sample of 215 participants, confirming the unidimensional structure of the scale. Reliability analyses indicated strong psychometric properties, with Cronbach’s Alpha (0.948), Composite Reliability (0.944), and Average Variance Extracted (0.607) values all exceeding accepted thresholds. The developed "Economic Hardship Scale for Athletes (EHSA)" consists of 11 items rated on a 5-point Likert scale, with total scores ranging from 11 to 55. Lower scores indicate a low perception of economic hardship, while higher scores reflect greater perceived difficulties. The EHSA provides a systematic means to assess financial barriers in amateur sports, offering a scientific foundation for preventive policies and support interventions. This study contributes uniquely to the sports psychology literature by addressing a critical but underexplored theme in the context of amateur athletics.

SPORCULARDA EKONOMİK ZORLUKLAR ÖLÇEĞİ (SEZÖ): GÜVENİRLİK VE GEÇERLİK ÇALIŞMASI

Öz

Bu araştırmanın amacı, amatör sporcuların karşılaştıkları ekonomik zorlukları belirlemek ve bu zorlukların sporcular üzerindeki etkilerini değerlendirmek üzere geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçme aracı geliştirmektir. Araştırma, betimsel nitelikteki yöntemsel bir tasarım doğrultusunda gerçekleştirilmiş ve süreç beş aşamada yapılandırılmıştır. İlk olarak literatür taramasıyla kavramsal çerçeve oluşturulmuş ve madde havuzu hazırlanmıştır. Uzman görüşleriyle kapsam geçerliği değerlendirilen ifadeler, ölçek taslağına dahil edilmiştir. Geliştirilen taslak, 418 amatör sporcuya uygulanarak Açımlayıcı Faktör Analizi (AFA) yapılmıştır. Ardından, 215 farklı katılımcıyla Doğrulayıcı Faktör Analizi (DFA) gerçekleştirilmiş ve ölçeğin tek boyutlu yapısı doğrulanmıştır. Güvenirlik analizlerinde elde edilen yüksek Cronbach’s Alpha (0.948), Bileşik Güvenirlik (0.944) ve Ortalama Açıklanan Varyans (0.607) değerleri, ölçeğin psikometrik açıdan güçlü olduğunu göstermektedir. Geliştirilen "Sporcularda Ekonomik Zorluklar Ölçeği (SEZÖ)", 5’li Likert tipi yapıdadır ve 11–55 puan arasında derecelendirme sunmaktadır. Düşük puanlar ekonomik zorlukların az, yüksek puanlar ise fazla algılandığını ifade eder. SEZÖ, sporcuların karşılaştığı ekonomik engellerin sistematik biçimde belirlenmesine imkân tanıyarak, önleyici politikalar ve uygulamalara bilimsel dayanak sağlamayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu yönüyle çalışma, spor psikolojisi literatürüne önemli ve özgün bir katkı sunmaktadır.
