Informal Digital Learning of English Among Tourism Guidance Students: The Role of L2 Motivation in ESP

Advances in technology have expanded language learning beyond traditional classrooms, enabling self-directed engagement through digital tools. Informal Digital Learning of English (IDLE) plays a key role in this process, particularly in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) contexts where language learning is closely tied to future professional demands. This study examined how career-oriented motivation is associated with ESP learners’ engagement in IDLE. Using a quantitative design, data were collected from 76 undergraduate tourism students in Türkiye. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analyses revealed that the Ideal L2 Self was a significant predictor of IDLE engagement, whereas the Ought-to L2 Self was not. The findings highlight the significance of future professional identity in relation to informal digital learning and provide context-specific insight into how motivation operates in ESP settings. The study also suggests that ESP instruction may benefit from supporting learners’ career-oriented motivational visions.

Özel Amaçlı İngilizce Bağlamında Turizm Rehberliği Öğrencilerinin İnformal Dijital Dil Öğrenimi: İkinci Dil Motivasyonunun Rolü

Öz

Teknolojideki gelişmeler, dil öğrenimini geleneksel sınıf ortamlarının ötesine taşıyarak öğrenenlerin dijital araçlar aracılığıyla kendi kendine yönlendirilen öğrenme süreçlerine katılmalarını mümkün kılmıştır. İnformal Dijital İngilizce Öğrenimi, özellikle dil öğreniminin gelecekteki mesleki gerekliliklerle yakından ilişkili olduğu Özel Amaçlı İngilizce (ÖAİ) bağlamlarında bu sürecin önemli bir bileşeni haline gelmiştir. Bu çalışma, kariyer odaklı motivasyonun ÖAİ öğrenen öğrencilerin İnformal Dijital İngilizce Öğrenimine katılımı ile nasıl bir ilişki içinde olduğunu incelemektedir. Nicel bir araştırma deseni kullanılarak, Türkiye’de bir devlet üniversitesinde öğrenim gören 76 turizm rehberliği öğrencisinden veri toplanmıştır. Betimsel istatistikler ve çoklu regresyon analizleri, İdeal İkinci Dil Benliği’nin İnformal Dijital İngilizce Öğrenimi’ne katılımın anlamlı bir yordayıcısı olduğunu, buna karşın Zorunlu İkinci Dil Benliği’nin anlamlı bir yordayıcı olmadığını göstermiştir. Bulgular, geleceğe yönelik mesleki kimliğin informal dijital öğrenmedeki önemini vurgulamakta ve ÖAİ bağlamında motivasyonun nasıl işlediğine ilişkin içgörüler sunmaktadır. Ayrıca sonuçlar, ÖAİ öğretiminde öğrencilerin kariyer odaklı vizyonlarının desteklenmesinin yararlı olabileceğini göstermektedir.
