Good Human Good Citizen from the Perspective of Secondary School Students

Öz

In this study it was aimed to determine the perceptions of secondary school students regarding good human and good citizen. The study was conducted with the participation of 114 students attending eighth grade. The research data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of two open-ended items. The obtained data were analyzed by descriptive analysis technique. The students’ views about both good human and good citizen were categorized under two dimensions: value and behavior. In the research, it was determined that the participants identified the good human mostly with the benevolence, honesty, considering others’ good/right/ not being selfish, tolerance, being moral, generosity, mercy, and not breaking one’s heart. Treating others respectfully and showing love, being respectful to such species of living creatures as animals and plants; protecting the environment, spreading positive energy, being polite and speaking nicely were among the values emphasized for good human. The values attributed to the good citizen by the participants were benevolence, tolerance, being dependable, and being fair. Protecting the country, being sensitive to-protecting the nature, obeying the social rules, respecting the society, treating people well/not disturbing them/not applying violence to them, taking others’ interests into consideration, setting a model as a person were expressed as behaviors expected from a good citizens by the participants.
