Examination of Borges' Story of "Death and the Compass" in Terms of Imagination

Abstract

In this article, the short story Death and Compass by Jorge Luis Borges is analyzed based on Carl G. Jung’s theory “The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious” and French author Gilbert Durand’s theory “The Anthropological Structures of the Imaginary.” In the beginning, a brief introduction to the short story was given along with how it was translated to Turkish audience. Secondly, upon laying the grounds of both theories, the protagonist Erik Lönnrot is associated with the “Diurnal Order” in Durand’s theory. Diurnal features such as “polemical antithesis”, “autistic withdrawal”, “schizomorphic structure”, and “geometrism” (terms, which were cited by him from several psychiatrists’ works) are observed in the protagonist Erik Lönnrot. After analyzing the character, in a similarly way, the mansion in the story was also studied based on the same order since that space also embraces geometry, symmetry, and shares a continuum with linear timeline. The objects in and outside of the mansion have also been examined with regards to the symbolic meanings as mentioned by the French theoretician so that the isotopes of notions time and death could be determined in that particular space. The statues of mythological figures such as Diana, Hermes, and Janus in that mansion were also a topic of research to understand the relation between the space and characters. In the last section of the study, Jung’s “Self” archetype, its symbolic representations, and the corresponding elements in the story have been explored. Having done his research on Borges’ short story based on psychatric and imaginary theories, the author of this article has come up with the idea that limitless findings could be discovered from Borges’ short stories by other authors who base their research on these theories, and in the meantime, he expects that his research contributes to the research field and to the ones that are connected to it.

Borges’in “Ölüm ve Pusula” Öyküsünün İmgelem Kuramı Açısından İncelenmesi

Öz

Bu çalışmada Arjantinli yazar Jorge Luis Borges'in Ölüm ve Pusula öyküsü, Carl G. Jung'un "Kolektif Bilinçdışının Arketipleri" teorisi ve Fransız kuramcı Gilbert Durand'ın "İmgelem Kuramı" üzerinden incelenmiştir. İlk başta öyküye dair kısa bir özete ve dilimize kazandırılışına dair bilgilere yer verilmiştir. İkinci olarak yukarıdaki iki kuramdan biri olan Durand'ın İmgelem Kuramında sözü geçen "Gündüz rejimi" ile öykünün başkahramanı Erik Lönnrot arasında bağlantılar kurulmuştur. Ardından Gündüz rejiminin özellikleri arasında bulunan ve Durand’ın birtakım psikiyatristlerin çalışmalarından kaynak göstermiş olduğu "polemik karşı sav", "otistik gerileme", "şizomorf yapı" ve "geometrizm" gibi unsurlar detektif Lönnrot'ta gözlemlenmiştir. Karakter incelemesinden sonra öyküdeki malikhane uzamı da bulundurduğu geometri, simetri, doğrusal zaman gibi özellikleriyle aynı rejim üzerinden incelenmiştir. Uzamın hem içinde hem çevresinde bulunan çeşitli nesneler de Fransız yazarın kuramında bahsettiği üzere sembolik düzlemde ele alınmış olunup zaman ve ölüm kavramlarının malikhane uzamındaki izdüşümlerinden söz edilmiştir. Malikhanenin içinde bulunan Diana, Hermes ve Janus gibi mitolojik figürlerin heykelleri, uzam ve öyküdeki karakterler arasındaki ilişki üzerinden incelenmiştir. Çalışmanın son aşamasında, Jung'un "Öz" arketipi, bu arketipin ne tür sembollerle temsil edildiği ve aynı arketipin öyküdeki izdüşümünün hangi nesneler aracılığıyla verildiği saptanmıştır. Makalenin yazarı, Borges’in kısa öyküsünün psikiyatri ve imgelem kuramları üzerinden incelemesinin ardından aynı yazarın hem incelenen öyküsünün hem de diğer öykülerinin ilgili kuramlar yoluyla sayısız bulgunun diğer yazarlar tarafından da saptanabileceği fikrini edinmiş olup çalışmasının ilgili alana ve yazarlarına katkı sağlamasını umar.
