Development of an Attitude Scale Towards Home Education

Öz

Home education is an alternative educational service designed for students who are unable to attend formal educational institutions due to health problems, disabilities, or other special circumstances. The primary aim of this practice is to safeguard students’ right to education and ensure continuity in their academic development. In this way, students are able to continue learning in a planned and structured manner despite the circumstances they face. Educational practices are planned in accordance with each student’s individual characteristics and needs, and instruction is delivered face-to-face in the home environment by teachers assigned in accordance with the curriculum. When necessary, the process is supported by digital materials, online resources, and technological tools, thereby ensuring uninterrupted educational progress and providing a flexible and accessible learning experience. This model also supports students’ social and emotional development. The effectiveness of home education largely depends on teachers’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Therefore, teachers’ attitudes are regarded as a critical factor in the successful implementation of home education services. The aim of this study was to develop a valid and reliable scale for measuring teachers’ attitudes toward home education services provided to students who are unable to attend formal education due to health problems. Based on teachers’ experiences and views, a nine-item attitude scale was developed. During the scale development process, a review of the relevant literature was conducted, and an item pool was generated based on expert opinions. The Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin (KMO) test was performed as part of the data analysis, while Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were conducted to examine construct validity. In the reliability analysis, the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient indicated high internal consistency. The findings demonstrated that the developed nine-item scale possesses high validity and reliability and provides an effective instrument for assessing teachers’ attitudes toward home education.
