Notes on the Migration of ʿĀmilī Scholars to Safavid Iran

THE influx of Arab Shici scholars from the region of Jabal cAmil in what is now

southern Lebanon to Safavid Iran (907-1135/1501-1722) and their important contributions

to Iranian cultural, religious, and political history have long been recognized.'

According to the conventional view, the Safavid Shahs, upon the establishment of the

Empire and the adoption of Twelver Shicism as the state religion in Tabriz in 907/1501,

imported large numbers of Arab Shici scholars from the areas of Bahrain and especially

Jabal cAmil to assist in the implementation of the new religious order. Concerning this

phenomenon, scholars of Safavid history have tended to speak in historical generalities

based on limited data. Some recent studies have begun to provide more specific details;

yet despite the growing attention to the topic, fundamental disputes remain concerning

the causes and significance of the migration as well as the nature of the cAmili scholars'

relationships to the Safavids and Safavid Shicism.

Safevî İran'a Âmilî Ulemânın Göçüne Dair Notlar

Bu gün Güney Lübnan’da yer alan Cebel-i Âmil bölgesinden Arap Şiî âlimlerin Safevî İran’a (907-1135/1501-1722) akını ve onların İran kültür, din ve siyasî tarihine önemli katkıları kabul edile gelmiştir. Alışıla gelmiş görüşe göre imparatorluğun kurulması ve [ardından] On iki İmam Şiîliği 907/1501 tarihinde Tebriz’de devletin mezhebi olarak kabul edilmesi üzerine Safevî şahları, yeni dinî düzeninin uygulanmasına yardımcı olmak maksadıyla Bahreyn ve özellikle Cebel-i Âmil bölgesinden çok sayıda Arap Şiî ulema ithal etmişlerdir.
