Trends in Diabetes and the Coexisting Burden of Obesity among Adults in Türkiye, 2008–2025
Öz
This study aimed to examine changes in reported diabetes and its coexistence with obesity among adults in Türkiye from 2008 to 2025. Data from eight waves of the Türkiye Health Survey included 145,396 adults aged ≥18 years. Survey-weighted prevalences were calculated for diabetes, obesity, and obesity–diabetes phenotypes and standardized to the pooled age and sex distribution. Temporal trends were assessed using weighted logistic regression adjusted for age, age squared, and sex. Crude diabetes prevalence increased from 5.6% in 2008 to 12.6% in 2025, while standardized prevalence rose from 6.3% to 11.2%. The adjusted odds of diabetes increased by 22% per five years (adjusted odds ratio 1.22, 95% confidence interval 1.20–1.25). However, the 2014 questionnaire change limits interpretation of the full series; during 2014–2025, diabetes odds continued to increase (aOR 1.09, 95% CI 1.06–1.12). Standardized coexisting obesity and diabetes was 4.5% in 2014 and 4.6% in 2025. Diabetes increased significantly over time among adults with normal weight, overweight, and obesity. Standardized diabetes prevalence was 11.3% in 2022 and 11.2% in 2025, with no detectable adjusted difference (aOR 0.99, 95% CI 0.93–1.06). Additional national survey waves are needed to determine whether this apparent stability persists.
