Health and Disease In Ghazālī’s Ihyā

Abstract

In this study, within the boundaries of al-Ghazālī’s (d. 505/1111) Iḥyā al-ʿulūm al-dīn, it was aimed to determine and reveal in which framework and how the concepts of health and disease are defined, what kind of rules are revealed in this work, especially in terms of moral (spiritual/heart/ethical) medicine and how the sciences are classified and evaluated in terms of value and importance within the framework of these concepts. One of the most important issues in the Iḥyā is the issue of health and disease in spiritual and moral terms. In the work, especially in terms of moral medicine, many basic issues have been dealt with and resolved, and many rules have been put forward in this sense. All the intellectual weave in Iḥyā is centered on the hereafter and the happiness of the hereafter. It is nothing but the heart that has been purged of its ability to lead a person to this main goal and that has been restored to health and safety from diseases (moral/ethical). Since it prevents the happiness of the hereafter and leads to eternal misery, the main disease is the disease of the heart (moral/spiritual/ethical). That is why study of science regarding the treatment of heart diseases (spiritual healing) is like fard al-‘ayn (obligation upon each). In this respect, the greatest value and worth in Iḥyā was given to the science of mu‘āmala (science of purifying heart) and the science of mukāshafa (ma‘rifatullāh) that emerged as a result of it. The science of mukāshafa is the purpose of sciences and the science that is demanded in itself. All other sciences, on the other hand, have been subjected to a value and worth rating only in proportion to their help and contribution to the realization of the aforementioned main goal.

Gazzâlî’nin İhyâ Adlı Eserinde Sıhhat ve Maraz

Öz

Bu çalışmada Gazzâlî’nin (ö. 505/1111) İhyâ’ü ‘ulûmi’d-dîn adlı eseri sınırları dahilinde sıhhat ve maraz kavramlarının hangi çerçevede ve nasıl tanımlandığı, özellikle mânevî (ruhanî/kalbî/ahlâkî) tabâbet açısından bu eserde ne gibi kaidelerin ortaya konulduğu ve ilimlerin bu kavramlar çerçevesinde kıymet ve ehemmiyet açısından nasıl bir değerlendirmeye tabi tutulduğu tespit edilerek ortaya konulmak istenmiştir. İhyâʾdaki en önemli konulardan birisi mânevî ve ahlâkî açıdan sıhhat ve maraz konusudur. Eserde özellikle mânevî tabâbet açısından birçok temel mesele ele alınarak çözüme kavuşturulmuş ve bu anlamda birçok kaide ortaya konulmuştur. İhyâ’daki bütün fikirsel örgü âhiret ve âhiret saadeti merkezlidir. İnsanı bu esas gayeye ulaştıracak olan kabiliyeti de tasfiye edilmiş, hastalıklardan (mânevî/ahlâkî) sıhhat ve selamete kavuşturulmuş olan kalpten başka bir şey değildir. Âhiret saadetine engel olması ve ebedî şekâvete iletmesi hasebiyle esas hastalık, kalbî (mânevî/ruhanî/ahlâkî) olan hastalıktır. Onun içindir ki kalp hastalıklarının tedavisine ilişkin ilimin tahsili (tıbb-ı kulûb) farz-ı ayn hükmündedir. Bu itibarla İhyâʾda en büyük değer ve kıymet mu‘âmele ilmi (ilm-i ıslâh-ı kalp) ile onun neticesinde ortaya çıkan mükâşefe ilmine (mârifetullah) verilmiştir. Mükâşefe ilmi ilimlerin gayesi ve lizâtihi matlûb olan ilimdir. Diğer tüm ilimler ise ancak sözü edilen temel hedefi gerçekleştirmeye olan yardım ve katkıları ölçüsünde bir değer ve kıymet derecelendirmesine tabi tutulmuştur.
