A Research on Mersin’s Expectations from the XVIIth Mediterranean Games

Structured interviews had been conducted to determine the expectations of Mersin from XVIIth Mediterranean Games. Interviews were held with twenty five top managers who were selected from the list of city protocol, presidents of some non-governmental organizations and managers from the tourism industry. Interviews were executed from January to June, 2013. The findings, obtained from content analysis, showed that the participants had mostly some expectations such as the economic revival, promotion of cultural mosaics of the city, contribution to tourism development, social and cultural interaction. Local enterprises’ statements on having no expectations anymore due to being excluded from the preparation process to the games formed one of the major finding of the research. It was also found that the city has some administrative problems such as the lack of accommodation capacity, transportation problems, deficiencies in infrastructure and environment, the lack of cooperation among the organizations and inability to create a high-level organization in tourism.

Mersin’in XVII. Akdeniz Oyunları’ndan Beklentileri Üzerine Bir Araştırma

Mersin’in XVII. Akdeniz Oyunları’ndan beklentilerini belirlemek amacıyla, yapılandırılmış görüşme yöntemiyle bir araştırma gerçekleştirilmiştir. Görüşmeler; kentin il protokolünde yer alan kurumlar, sivil toplum kuruluşları, turizm sektöründen yöneticiler olmak üzere 25 yönetici ile yapılmıştır. Görüşmeler 2013 Ocak-Haziran ayları arasında yapılmıştır. İçerik analiziyle elde edilen bulgular, katılımcıların en çok kent ekonomisinde canlanma, kent reklam ve tanıtımı ile kentin kültür mozaiğinin tanıtımı, kentin turizm gelişimine katkı, sosyal ve kültürel etkileşim gibi beklentilerinin bulunduğunu göstermektedir. Yerel işletmelerin oyunlara hazırlık sürecinde dışarıda bırakılmaları nedeniyle beklentilerinin kalmadığını ifade etmeleri, çalışmanın önemli bir bulgusunu oluşturmaktadır. Çalışma kentin bu etkinlik kapsamında; konaklama kapasitesi yetersizliği, ulaşım, çevre ve altyapı sorunları ile kentte kurumlar arası işbirliği ve turizmde örgütlenememe gibi yönetimsel sorunları da bulunduğunu ortaya koymaktadır.
